Bapristic —Says the Moncton Times: Pastor Hinson baptized one convert in the First B+ptist Church yesterday morning, and in the evening received 29 into membership, of whom 25 were baptized within the past month. The total received into the church so far this year is 112.

Home From Quespec.—(Gunners Prowse, torman, Burke, and Wood of No. 2 Battery G A.,and gunner McAreeand corporal Ward of No. 1 Battery have arrived home from (Juebec, where they have been taking a short course of military Instruction at the Citadel. Of course the result of their examinations is not yet kuown, but we feel sure that they will obtain their certificates.

A Spuenpip Recorp.—According to London advices the Canadian Pacific steamer Empresa of Japan, made an excellent record on her trial trip. She ran a mile at a mean speed of 18 91 knots, being a ksot and a half above the speed stipulated in the contract. The engines developed uearly ten thousand horse power. Rapid progress is being made with the Emp ess of China, the last of the Canadian Pacifie’s new flect.

Too Mucu Marriep.—Thomas H. Davis, a Toronto man, who conceived it to be the proper thing to have two wives living at vhe game time, came before the magistrate for sentence at Toronto, e few days ago, and was committed to the central prison for six months. Mrs. Jane Sebastian Davis, wife No. 2, was with him to the last, weeping copiously and promising all kinds of affection- ate things and loving receptions on his release from prison,

Dorne Nicety Now.—The Agriculturist says : A short time ago a mare belonging to Mr. D. A. Sharp, of this town, stepped into a hole in the snow, in such a way as to grab the foot, by the frozen edges of the crust, with the result that the leg was skin- ed from the back of the knee down. The skin was torn completely off, leaving the bone and tendons bare. It took fifty stitches to secure the skin when it was re- placed. The animal is now doing nicely.

Arrer Damaces.—-A Halifax despatch says : Captain Wrayton, of the Ocean Belle, whom the Newfoundland authorities refused to allow to purchase a cargo of frozen heriing for consumption in this market, intends to vigorously push his claim for damages which he places at $1,509. He is highly indignant that he a British captain, should be refused

Ravaces or LaGnipre.—The men employed in the Gould mines at Candalria, near Carson City, Nev., have suffered greatly from the ravages of la grippe. Hr Was Despoxpen?.—A York Co., N. B., man named John Graham, took a heavy dose of strychnine one day last week, and at latest accounts was at death’s doors. Graham, who was about fifty years of age, had been despondent for some time.

Orr THE Track —A snowplough attached to the train for Sourie, which left Mount Stewart last evening, ran off the track at St. Peter’e. The train in consequence remained there all night. A special left town this morning to replace the plough, and will get through to Souris to-day.

Potice Court.—This morning, Thomas McCloskey was fined $5 and coats or 20 days imprisonment for assaulting John Prunty ; adrunk was fined $2 or 8 days and two hard-looking vagrants were re- manded for further evidence. Inthe case of the two men charged with the breach of the Lord’s Day Act, one was fined $1.62 and costs on hisown confession, and the

Frozen To Dreatu.—A Nova Scotian named Archie McPhair, who had been trapping on the Lake of the Woods, in the North West, and who has been missing since early in February, hag been found frozen to death. On the 2nd of February he visited Keewatin and sold furs, returning with supplies. It is supposed he became exhausted when within two miles of home and fell to the ice and was unable to rise again.

The dead body of a man named Daniel Chisholm was found in a clump of bushes on a farm at Churchville, Pictou, N. S., afew days ago. Chisholm was last seen at Stellar- ton, on the evening of February 2nd. It is supposed that he came to his death through cold and exposura to the inclement weather.
