OTTAWA, May iii—The Sunday news- paper is doomed. An appeal was made to the committee on behalf of live British Columbia morning papers that publish Sundays but gave their employee a restby bringing out no issue on Mondays. The committee. however, appreciate undesi- rable features of the sale of newspapers on Sundays and will doubtless frame their finding accordingly.
Newspapers publishing on Monday morn- ings will be allowed to set their staffs to work at 8 o'clock Sunday evening.
The clauses dealing with‘ the Sunday operations of trains will be to some ex. tent in the nature of a compromise bill as drafted did not attempt toiuterfere with passenger traillc other than to put a. ban on Sunday excursions. The bill may bi- further amended to allow delivery from cars on Sunday of perishable goods on arrival and the transfer from train to boat or elevator of wheat arriving from the west on Sundays at terminal points on the great lakes. Sunday labor will not be forbidden upon vessels where it is essential to their leaving port on schedu- letl time.

The theory advanced that the children have been kidnapped by friends in order to frighten the father, who is a drunken reprobate, into sobrsty, but examination finds no foundation for this.

WASHINGTON, May iii—The Navy de- partment have received the first report of a serious fight which occurred at Guantanamo. Cuba. on April 29, between American sailors and natives, in which one American was shot and tweny-two others were wounded.
While the sailors were ashore at Guantanamo they left the naval reserva- tion and were attacked by a large band of natives, who used their knives and innchetes with telling effect. The blue Jackets had no weapons, and although out numbered three and four to .one they fought with their lists until all were disabled.
The local police. it is said, instead of attempting to quell the riot, sided with the natives. The sailor who was shot was for a time in a. serious condition, but has since recovered.

The liberal convention will take on May 25th, and the Conservative on May 29th. The elections will likely be held either on June 22 or June 25.

Sheriff Smith while here questioned Hayes for an hour, and the questions and answers were taken by n stencgraphcr. linyes did not deny having had conversa— tion with Mrs. Margcrct F. Brown, of this town, with whom he boarded, and said he may have made some foolish talk while drinking heavily. lie positively denied being at the Mable Page house or that he even knew where it is situated. He said that during the spring of 1004 when the murder was committed he was working at \Vellesley. Mass., and on a certain day he did call at the house to gctu drink of water and may have spoken of that to Mrs. Brown, but he did not think it was the day of the murder.
He stated that. all he knew about the Mabel Page case is what he read in the papers. He denied ever going under any other name than “Jerry lliiycs." lie says he arrived here in September, mill, and has .mudo his headquarters here since that time. The officers took Hayes and Mrs. Brown to Skowhcgunas arranged They would not reach Skowhcgan unti after thmdclock. . .
