The Finances of Canada.

A statement of the Revenue and Expenditure of Canada, during the fiscal year 1883-4, has been issued. In brief it is as follows: ,

It has been remarked, and it is worthy of remark, that this result is very neat the estimate of the Finance Minister. Sir Leovard said that the surplus at the end of the year would probably be about $2,000,000, including $1,000,000 for Dominion Lands sales. The sales yielded $951,636; aud the surplus is $1,716,873. Considering the reductions in the value of sugar, which, of course, lessened the amount of duty received for suzar, the approximation is a close one.

Phe receipts from Customs were less than those of last year, by $2,979,692,

and from excise by $800,807. This] fuiling off is due partly to the reductions | made inthe tariff, and partly to the

temporary slackness of trade.

The Latin Language.

Tue Latin is an outgrowth of old Oscan, Etruscan, and Greck, and rauks as oue of the original languages of Enrope, giving paternity to the lialian, French, and Spanish, and to a very large proportion of English. It ceased to be spoken in Italy abdut anno 581, and was first tanght in England qy Adelmus, (brother to Ina, King oft Wessex, auno 689), in the 7th century. The use of Latin in law deeds in Exg- liand gave way to the common tongue | about anno 1,000; was revived in the \reiga of Henry II, but again gave way (to English under Henry ILL It was fiaally discontinued in religious worship in 1558, and in courts of Jaw inv 1731. The foreign pronuuciation of Latin, viz.. a, ah-e, ai, e, ete, was adopted in English Universities, and many schools in 1875-6.

Wedding Bells.

Advices from Riviere Du Loup to the Herald announce that the marriage of Mr. Joseph Pope, Private Secretary to Sir John A. Macdonald, to Miss Henriette ‘Tasch- erean, eldest daughter of the Hon. Henry Taschereau, of the Quebec Superior Court, was celebrated yesterday at Riviere Du Loup, by Rev. L. B. Lais. The bride wore a dress of white silk surah, trimmed with siik broche velvet, usual veil and orange blossoms and ornaments of pearls and diamonds. The presents were very numer- ous and costly. After the ceremony the wedding party were entertained at break- fast at the residence of the bride’s father. The bride was attended by her sister, Mise Blanche Tascherean, and Mr. W. C. Des- Brisay, editor of the Charlottetown Herald, acted as best man. The guests included Judge and Mrs. Taschereau of the Supreme Court of Canada, and Mr. E, Pacaud, oi Arthabaska, The newly married coupl. left at noon for Halifax amid showers o!

The statement of expenditure shows an increase of $2,450,185 on the ex: | penditure of the previous year. On. public works, there was av increased out- lay of $1,110,009, on militia an increase of $270,000, on Civil! Government $150,- 000, on the Post Office $136,000, on the Fisheries 119, 000, and oa Dominion Lands $48,000.

It is explained that the increases are due to the development aad settlement of the great Northwest, to the Fisheries exhibition, and to the natural growth of the requirements of the country.

The burden of taxation is measured by receipts from Customs and Excise, which for the past year amounted to $25,489,199. From this amount deduct the surplus on hand, and there remains as actual taxation for the carrying on of the business of the country, $23,772,526, or about $5.05 per head of the popu- lation.

The revenue obtained in the first three months of the present year amounts to $8,659,832, considerably more than was received during the same months of last year.

A wreath, or uro, or harp or anchor leafed out upon the wall of the sitting room, (provided the antumnal tints of the leaves have dried into them, and pre- served) has a refining influence, and it is a valuable iastinet worth educativg that inclines us to love the beawiful. Each sexsou has its glories, aod man is given eyes to see them, and a soul to feel how Leautiful and how varied is their nature. When the autnma closes up the summer, it showers down its profusiou of gorge- ously tinted leaves upon its grave, and bids the lover of pature “gather up the

The Explosion at Quebec.

The Chronicle's account of the explosion at Quebec is published in Tae Examiner to-day. The Montreal Gazette suys: the cause of the explesion is still a mystery,but this much seems certain, that the perpetra- tors of the deed are not ol the class of men who have earned the un- enviable name of ‘‘dynamiters.” There could be no possible reason on the part o! any body of men for demolishing the build- ing, and the suggestion that a public object was to be gained by the deed is too mons- trously absurd to be worth a moment’s consideration. The buildings were only in the course of erection, no one was employed about them excepting the workmen of different nationalities, and they alone would have been the sufferers, had life been lost. But for the fact stated with much emphasis and confidence that ne explosives were used on the premises, there would be no room to doubt that acci- dent alone had caused the explosion, and if subsequent investigation establishes tha’ the dynamite must have been purposely placed in the building, the motive of the outrage will have to be sought in othe: then class interests. As to what motives could inspire the dastardly act it would serve no good purpose to speculate.

Dundas Notes.

This county exhibition is now passed,and prououuced by the hon. judges, to surpass its predecessors. The day was very favor- abie, and everything passed off quietly. But their is one thing to be much regretted, that the gencralrin of our farmers and mechanics do not take more lively interest in these exhibitions.

Mr. McDougall’s vessel, built for L. Kick ham, & Co., Souris, was launched on tne 4th inst., at 9a.m. She glided into her native clements most splendidly, her build- ing all though,was most succeseful. There were about 150 spectators present. Among the honorable mentions, were Hon. L. Kickham, Souris, Mc. James R. McLean, M. P. P., Souris, Mr. Alexander Martin, M. P. P., Valleyfield, Capt. Thos. Kickham, Sonris, and John McDougall, M. P. P., her contractor. This vesse) has two trucks, mast head, two catheads, and two knight heads, splendid spars, white pine, costing the owners in the rough when here $300, and are the best sticks that could be obtained for a vessel of her tonnage. She is painted white, ver- million striped, gilt head and rail boards of most exquisite finish, made by Mr. Huntly, who is a celebrated mechanic. She will probably load with potatoes for the Boston or Newfoundland markets out of this har- bor, which speaxs weil of her enterprising owners, giving the people in the vicinity in which she was built a good chance for their produce. ‘This firm has done a large busi- ness alceady in cattle and produce this fall.

Our pepular merchant, James Johnston, Esq., Grand River, who has done a large business, I am informed finds the mackerel scarcer this season than last, but of a better quality.

The crops are all gathered home around here, only potatoes, and they are gathered as fast as time permits.

R. Burdett & Son are loading a schooner here now, with potatoes, but the farmers are holding on for higher prices. There are good prospects of a lively trade in cvreals here this fall.
