Canapian Troorvs Arrive-—The Caner dian troops reached London shortly befoi midnight on Tuesday and were received by Major General Methune, Sir Donald A. Smith, high comm: ssioner and other offi- cers and Officials. Mlethune in- spected the contingent and expressed his pleasure at the smart ay pearance of the men. As they marehed from the railway station to Chelsea barracks they were loudly cheerei by large crowds that had been waiting their arrival.

Teacsers’ Convention.—The Teachers’ Convention of the Western Inspectorate will meet in the Alberton High School oa June 29th and Soin inst. Tue first cession will open at 3.30 p.m. Papers will be read by Misses Squarebriggs and Durant, and Mr. J. H. Bunotain. Mr. P. J. Trainor, the President, will deliver the opening address, and Mr. C. W. Kie'y will givea lesson in history. Atthe entertainment in Woodman’s Hall in the evening Miss Stentiford, of Charlottetown, will give two readings.

A isn Story.—Two city sports were recently trout fishing at the blockhouse, in an open boat. There was great excite- ment, and the captain (who by the way, is an old hand at the business) roared out that

his friend had on the largest trout ever hooked at this famous resort. The boys

in the otber boats and also the captain, were loud in their acclamations to the re- cruit to hold on, take time and drown the fish. The captain, at the right time, bent forward with the landing net aud landed a smelt that was on the bob fly and a_ large cobbler that was on the tail fly. Tue Srace.—The Josie Mills Company played *‘T'wixt Love and Duty” last even- ing to another small house. The play was of a most pleasing character, and it was rendered in a manner which evoked hearty applause. Miss Mills as Mercy Baxter excelled herself, and she was well support- ed by Mr. Thayer, Mr. Harvey and other members of the company. The costumes worn by the ladies were very handsome. “Twixt Love and Duty” will be repeated at the matinee on Saturday afternoon. The specialties by Messrs. Mack and McEnary, last night were up to the standard, and won several encores. To-night the comedy drama “The Black Flag” will be put upon the boards. This p!ay was given in Char- lottetown four years ago by Miss Mills’ Company, and it was greatly appreciated. It will probably be witnessed by a large audience to-night. Thirty-five cents will admit a lady and gentleman to the best seats.

A YERY SUDDEN DEATH.

Mr, John A. McLaine Stricken By Apoplexy,

And Dies at the Prince Edward Island Hospital

The sudden calling away of Mr. John A. McLaine, sub-~collector of Customs at St. Peter’s Bay, must forcibly illustrate the truth of the Scriptural injanction that “in

the midst of life we are in death.” Mr. McLaine came to Charlottetown yesterday in the _ forenoon train from the east. Ue was then ap-

parently in his usual excellent health. A few hours later whilst attending to some business On one of the wharves he was stricken with apoplexy. Medical aid was promptly called in, and Mr. McLaine was taken to the Prince Edward Island Hos- pital. Here everything that skilled medi- cal men and loving hands could no for him wasdene. But notwithstanding all this his condition became more serious and about one o’clock this morning the vital spark fled.

Mr. McLaine was sixty-eight years of age, and was well and favorably known in Charlottetown and elsewhere throughout the province. He leaves a wife and a son and daughter to mourn their loss. His body wil be taken to St. Peter’s Bay this afternoon. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at one o’clock.
