And so my dear-pitsed- off friends, you found the heading shitfuck derogatory, so derogativs in fact that ‘eoma of you had to throw the paper easy upon seeing the uord.- Actually to find such narrow-minded people among university students is e-- larming. The word is so commonly used, i.e. books, newspaper aid in conversa- tion that it had lost a gr great deal of its original meaning.

With students elections rapidly approaching, those seeking positions on the U.P.E.I.S.U.Executivs should be aware of the implications of their decision. For this reason, The Cadre obtained a few interesting glimpse of the workings of the present S.U. Exactiva through the kind assistance of Vice— Praeidant Comptroller, Leonard McCerdle. Here are some general questions whiEH us put to Mr. McCardle and his replies.

In general, what are some.of the duties ‘of the executive's members, other than those listed in the constitution?

Well, besides setting on the Senate and the Board of Bobarnors, executive mem- bare also sit on committees of these bodies. This, of course, adds a great deal of time to our schedule which usually averages out to 20-30 hours a week.

What qualifications should members of the ex- ecutive possess in your opinion?

' They nust certainly should be flexible in their relations with other peo- ple.‘ There are bound to be hassles and disagreements,” as in any organization and aneability to give-and-take in this type of situation comes in quite handy. Also, a willingness to make sac— rifices is helpful.

Are they any benefits from an executive position?

Well, of course, there is money. The President gets .81,000 a year, the Treasurer gets 8800.00, the three Vice-Presidents get 8500.00 and the Ombudsman, who is appointed, gets 8390.00. .BaEides this, there ii i‘ possibility that with the ‘apprevel of Council, some members go the executive

The Cadre had no part- icular reason to use this word other than to occupy space but from using it we have fodnd out that 1. a large number ofpeople read the Cadre. 2. The students are capable of reaction and 3. A fair number of studentd are narrow-minded.

However, for those of you that threw away the Cadre on seeing the word, and have vowed never to read another copy of the paper, we sympathize with you. Along with nor use of "crude words" the paper also has a great deal of content. and information pertaining

may get 850.00 a week plus summer school tuition, in order to keep things running during the summer. This is something which is a neces- sity with 800 students at- tending summer session.

Are there any fringe Benefits?

Yes there are such things as free beer at the Pig'n' Whistle, which may come to six per member per week and one pass per might to Winter Carnival events.

. What are some df the irritants in this type of ‘Job?

‘ For one thing, your marks will probably suffer. Also, you have fery little privacy, what with students and other people continually _getting in touch with you for one thing or another.

Finally, what should people expect next year?

Well, it would be nice‘ to have more participation from council members, espe- cially if they really want to represent the students. ‘Also, there are such things

as course evaluations and atheletic fees which will have to come up for con- sideration in the near fu- ture. People should be thinking about them now. And when will the new executive take office?

' They will come into power around the first of March and the old execu- tive will stay around,es consultants until the end of March -— to smooth out any bumps which may arise.

But for those of you who think the Cadre is 'lacking in content, why not Join the staff or at least write an article for the soap box.

Student participation on the Cadre is improving. For example, we have had a number of original cartoons contributed by a member of the student body and hope to have similar contributions again.

The philosophy depart- ment (see Alciphron) is also contributing.to the paper regularly and we would like to see more departments do this. Not too academic -— your views on the university, students etc.
