NEWS NOTES. At Hamilton active steps are being taken to provide for the city’s future needs in the way of parks.

It is estimated that between 5,000 and 9,000 men will be employed in the shanties this winter on the Upper Ottawa.

One hundred acres of Vancouver Island coal lands, which a year ago could not be sold for $1,000, was sold on ‘Tuesday for $30,000.

The settlers on the French shore of New- foundland are becoming as notorious for their fractious conduct as the Afghans. The island belongs to Great Britain, and the people acknowledge the Colonial author- ity, but since the Treaty of Utrecht the . reach settlers have used a certain part of the coast to cure their fish. Sometimes the British subject thinks the Frenchman an intruder, and again it occurs to the Frenchman that because he has concurrent rights in a certain district that he must as well have exclusive rights. This is what led to the late conflict on the French shore, and to make things quiet H. M. 8. Druid has left St. John’s, N. F., for the scene of the row. A St. Petersburg despatch of the 23rd September says:—For some days past there has been considerable excitement here, in- dicating that we are on the eve of great events. Large numbers of students have arrived. ‘Che police are more active than ever. Preclamations are issued by secret printing establishments and profusely cir- culated.
