Mr. Bernard Croken, proprietor of that popular summer resort, ‘‘ The Seaside Hotel,” has been laid up for a few days with erysipelas in the hand. We hupe to see him restored to health and usefulness in a few days. He has lately added a number of improvements to his establishment.
Mr. Terrence Goodwin, proprietor of the Emerald Carriage Shop, has also been add- ing to his already well equipped establish- ment, He has invented a new system of cov- ering roofs withswhich he exp :cts to revolu- tionize the building industry in the future.
Mr. Francis T Murphy, of the Emerald Boot and Shoe Factory, who also does a general auctioneering and commission busi- ness, is about starting a reading room, ete.
Mr. W. H. Haslam, our new merchant, is doing a stirring business.
Gur popular and genial doctor is now adding a new wing to his residence. John H. Perkins, of Albany, is the architect. Robert H. Mugford,.of Bradalbane, is the contractor. When completed it will be a great improvement to the village. He has also erected a balcony in front of his office.
Craig & Haslam are getting in their fall stock, and are evidently preparing fora big rush this fall..

One of the peculiaritieseof this season is the shortening of the period which usually elapses commencement of cutting the crops in early and late districts r« spect- ively. The explanation is that no corn has been able to keep green long after earing un- der the influence of the hot drotght, which has been only broken by a few showers since the 4th of June. There has been a good deal of premature ripening to bring crops in dis-
ticts where harvest is usually quite a month six weeks behind that of the south of Eng- land pretty well abreast with the earliest, and while wheat has not suffered much by the hastening process, except on light soils, barley and oats have been badly injured. From all parts of Kingdom reports are favorable in respect of wheat, while barley, oats, beans ind peas,except on rich, heavy soils, are all by mmon consent more or less below average. {tis supposed thatthe wheat area is fully equal to that of last year, and that the yield will be at least thirty bushels per acre, or two bushels above the ‘‘ ordinary average” of the United Kingdom. Last year the wheat area was 2,355,451 and if it is about the same this year we may expect a crop of some- thing like 71,000,000 bushels, or nearly 7,750,- 009 bushels more than that of 1886. Some estimates will probably be higher, but there are such very poor crops on light land that the average will be brought down materially by their deficiency. A good many samples of new wheat of varying quality, some weighing 53 to 64 pounds per bushel, have already been shown in the markets, andif the present waether lasts the whole crop will be fit for immediate use, and no doubta good deal of it will be hurried into market. The price is not tempting, being only 30s. to 33s. per quarter for red and 32s. to 35s. for white, but there is reason to fear that there will be a fall before arise occurs, and numbers of farmers are compelled to realize quickly. i —- <p- <—aaee Weather Bulletin.
