Its officials estimate that the shortage in food supplies will be serious until the I947 harvest even if large crops are gathered "both this year and next." They point out that the countries suffcring from tltcse deficiencies will likely rccciyc only two-thirds of the sup- plies they rcqtiire to maintain a “minimum sub- sistence level of nutrition.” Hence the shadow of scarcity that hangs over Europe; and con- ditions are even vyorse in the Far East. Sir john Boyd Orr, director-general of the Organ- ization, believcs that food shortages will con- tinue for another five years with the bulk of supplies haying to be drawn from Canada and the Ynited States.

As one means of coping with this prob- lem, the confcrctice at Copenhagen will con- ' tllevadiyisability of setting up a \V0rld lidiid that would be able, by inferna- hill‘ agreement, to bring about some meas- ureiof control in a programme of balanced production, It would also have the power to store surpluses against the day of need or to assist nations threatened by severe shortages, by selling thcnt supplies below the world price.

Inhcrctlt in this plan is the necessity of working out some connnou policy 0n prices and a marketing progrannne. Events are com- pelling the Organization to broaden its object- ives beyond thosc of a year ago. At that time, it placed Inost of its emphasis on technical work in raising the standards of nutrition and on scientific co-operation in the study of agricul- tural problems. It was made perfectly clear that the (Jrganizatioti depended upon voluntary co-operation for its success, since it lacked the power to impose its will upon any govern- ment. ,

The first and only government and province-wide hospital scheme in Canada. it is designed to lift a burden of financial concern from Saskatchewan families and at the same time raise the general health of the people bv encouraging them to make use of modern and adequate hospital services whenever they re- quire them. The method of financing is sim- ple. Each person in Saskatchewan, with cer- tain exceptions, will be required to pay. or to have paid on his behalf, the sum of $5. The maximum amount to be paid by any single fam- ily is $30. Precautions need to be taken, of course-BB they always need to be taken-but certainly there is no warrant for excitement or fear.
