Brervetine.-—There were seven starters in the 25 wile bicycle race for the champion stakes at Leicester, England, on Saturday. Fred Wood, of Leicester, won by six inches in 79m. 30s. Knapp, an American, was second. Crocker, also an American, and three others fell in a heap, but none of them was seriously injured.

Srycucar Fixo.—Mr. L. R. Miller, while making an excavation on his premises at Bridgetown, N.3S., a few days ago, found a woman's hand, but no other remains, im- bedded in the earth. The nails were still upon the hand, and a number of the cords and ligaments were visible. How the hagd came there is a mystery.

Fis Strorres.—The Portland, Me., Argus has the champion fish story of the season. It says the largest trout taken in the Rangsley Lakes this year weighed 84 pounds; and that two others were caught weighing seven pounds gach. The paperg which have been telling about four or five pound fish may just as well close down at once.

Porsonep By CANNED Meat.—A young man named Henderson, residing on Cunard street, while on his Way home from work last night, purchased a can of lobster for his sup- per. After eating « small quantity of the lobsters he was suddenly taken ill and grew black in the face. A doctor was immediately sent for, and on his arrival he found that the man had been poisoued by some acid getting into the meat which he had eaten. The doc- tor succeeded in restoring the man to con- sciousness, and he is how doing well. —Haii- fax Mail.

Wat rr Costs.—A Chicago man who evidently had considerable time to spare has studied the reports of the many missionary societies, and from them computed what it costs in dollars and cents to convert indivi- duals to Christianity. According to his figures, to make a Methdist costs $25, a Baptist $30, a Congregationalist $45, a Presbyterian $60, while it costs as high as $300 to get a convert into the Episcopal Church, and $360 into the Catholic Church. In Africa it costs $14 to convert, in Italy $42, in Spain $55, in the East Indies $50. A Jananese costs $80, a Chinese, $100,and every Christianised Jew costs $2,800.

Crearep Ur.—-The mystery surrounding the beat found bottom up in the harbor a few days ago has been selved. Mr. Archibald MeLean, keeper ot the Blockhouse Light, while in the city saw the boat, and at once recognized it as belonging to Lauchlin Me- Lean’s lobster factory at Governor's Island. Some people intown, who had relatives work- ing im the factory, asked Mr. McLean to find out the facts connected with the losing of the boat, and to ascertain if any person was missing. This Mr. McLean con- sented to do, and on Wednesday morning, in company with his brother Hector, he went over to the Island in search of the desired in- formation. He was there told that on Mon. day evening the little schooner Ark, in charge of some of the factory employes, and having
the boat in tow, left the Island for Point | this morning. When they

There was a larger number of commis- sioners present at the Assembly to-day.
The morning sederunt was occupied by the appointment of committees. It was agreed that home missions be taken up to night and foreign missions to-morrow, the French evangelization committee celebration of the 200th anniversary of the revolution of 1688 on Monday evening, religion and temperance on Tuesday evening, and Sab- bath schools and Sabbath observance on Wednesday evening.
The remit of the marriage question was set for Tost morning.
Thirteen’ Applications were made for leave to retire from the active ministry.
The only lively discussion that took place to-day was on an application presented by Dr. Murray on behalf of Dr. McLeod, Sydney, to have his name left on the Pres- bytery rollas Pastor Emeritus of his old congregation.
Judge Stevens opposed this strongly, while Dr. Caven wanted this carried. The Judge won the day. No precedent could be shown for such a title.
Mrs. Ritchey, wife of the Lieut.-Gover- nor, has invited the members of the as- sembly tu an ‘*‘at home” Wednesday even- ing next. They accepted with cheers.
The evening session was taken up with the consideration of the home mission and augmentation reports. The reports showed a surplus in the Eastern section of $5000 and a deficit in the Western section of $2500. The reports were adopted and suitable resolutions passed.

The Inter-Provincial Match WON BY NEW BRUNSWICK.
Hauirax, June 14.
For the second time, New Brunswick has won the Interprovincial Rifle Match, but to-day’s victory is the more creditable be- cause they vanquished Nova Scotia on its own ground, and ina wind that at times was a perfect puzzle to all the New Bruns- wick and P. E. Island visitors. The weather was fine, but a strong, gusty, cross rear wind prevailed. At 200 yards the
scores were: Nova Scotia, 239; New Brunswick, 235; P. E.. Isiand, 224. At 500 yards the home team fell away behind, the scores being: New Brunswick, 223; P. E. Island, 208;
Nova Scotia 206, New Brunswick leading by 13 points, and being 26 points ahead of P. E. Island. The excitement was at its heighi when the teams came back to the 600 yards mounds. On the first pair P. E. Island beat New Brunswick 10 points and Nova Scotia 2. In the second pair the home team were again behind the New Brunswick team, gaiming two on the Island- ers. The next pairof New Brunswickers made exactly tie—same scores as last —
while the Nova Scotians and P. E. Islanders fell back 5 and 14. re- spectively. Then came the last pair
when the six laid down New Brunswick had a lead of 19 over Nova Scotia and 44 over P. E. Island. Dover and Blair were the Nova Scotia men and they each made 27, while the New Brunswick men only got 51, but enough to give them the match by 15 points, the P. E. Island pair being eleven behind. The total scores are: New Brunswick, 661 ; Nova Scotia, 646; P. E. Island, 616. The visitors were envertained by the Nova Scotia men after the match. The most social time was spent at the hotel.

THE EMPEROR'S CONDITION.

In the Commons this p. m., Hon. Mr. Smith, First Lord of the Admiralty, said the Government received a despatch from Berlin dated 3 p. m., stating that the Em- peror was very much worse and there was no hope of his recovery. Inflammation of the lungs had set in. The Emperor's in- tellect was perfectly clear. He was suffer- ing no pain, Mr. Smith stated that it was with regret that he made the communica- tion regarding the Emperor's condition to Parliament.

When lying down the Emperor is apath- etic, at other times fully conscious. Early this evening he wrote a few farewell words to Bismarck. He afterwards took a sip of food through a tube. A little cocaine is being administered. The doctors believe the death agony will come soon after mid- night. |

_ ArrempreD Suicipe.—The Halifax Chron- icle veports that a young man named Robert Gibson, residing at Dalhousie, on Tuesday, while in a fit of insanity, attempted suicide by lacing a revolver at his head-and firing. The IL entered near the right eye, where it re- mained imbedded. Dr. Robinson was sum- moned from Annapolis and succeeded in ex- tracting the ball. Itis likely that Gibson wiil recover.
