The French in Africa.
The short cable dispatch which stated the French had begun the construction of a railroad between the Niger and Senegal rivers, in Africa, has a significance largely out of proportion to its brevity. The posed railroad would run from a poimt on the Senegal river near the head of naviga- tion, about 350 miles in a southeast direc- tion, coming upon the Niger river near the point in that stream where navigation ends. The werk wilt be a costly one, but it will
provide an easy means of extending trade ™
throughout the whole ef western Soudan. From the point tapped by the railroad to the falls of the Niger river is a distance of more than 1200 miles. The country is said, by travellers who have passed through it, to be densely inhabited hy a people who have made some considerable headway in acquiring the arts of civilization. For a long time the French have desired to ex- tend their trade to this region. The sur- veys made in the desert of Sahara were for the purpose of arriving at this result. It has probably been found that a railroad
certain, means of communication offered by the Senegal and Niger river route. The French already possess a settlement at the mouth of the Senegal river, and will,doubt- less take all the Pet neeessary to secure for themselves whatever advantage may come from the trade opening of this central African district.

Temperance at Long Creek.

| Sim,—On Friday evening, the 13th inat., /an entertainment was held under the aus- pices of St. Catherine Division of the Sons of Temperance, in the Orange Hall at Long Creek.
The Hall was thronged with an - able aril ‘enthusiastic company, al- though there were so many present, the best of order prevailed. The programme contained as great a variety as could pos- _sibly have been offered iu one entertain- _ment, and ail the selections were auch as to make it interesting to those present. | The opening address, delivered by Walter ‘J. MeLean, was such as the occasion de- wmanded; he briefly referred to the many benefits derived from the society, by assem- bling together in friendship and debating | upon various subjects of interest, He also ‘made reference to the Scott Act, and said ‘that although it was often violated, it. did ‘not, in this respect, differ from any cther taw on the Statute Book. Then tiolldwed a humorous reading by Mr. ©. Strétch, entitled “‘ Mrs. Smart learns how to skate.”’ fle was listened to with marked attention and frequently applauded. There. were three negro burlesques by some of the members, and during the performances they caused irrepressible peals of laughter, and the audience seemed thoroughly gyn After the applause had subsided
r. James McKinnon, from New Argyle Division, was called on. He madean earn- ead and eloquent speech in favor of the temperance cause. He was weil pleased to see 80 many of the young men present on such’an occasion. He thought that at home and at scheol the boys should be taught the evils arising from the use of stimulants, and their depressing effect wpon | the process of human life. He emphatically denounced moderate drinking, and believed that all those enslaved to strong drink be- came drunkards by them taking their social glass. Messrs. John McLauchlin, J. C. McKenzie, J. K. Ross, James MeLean, and several others gave some splendid ‘recita- tious, which werw well recited and deserved credit, The exercises of the evening were pleasautly diversified by choruses and songs from N A. MeNeiil, Alex. MeLran, J. St. Ros-, F. Stretch, Mra. W. E. Suretch, W. J. McLean, and Andrew Gallant (French

The whole proceedings, from first to last, refl cted the highest praise upon the mem- bers of the society.

We will take, to begin with, «a horse of the slowest walking pace, say about three miles per hour. To improve this, put him alongside of a horse, either ied or in har- ness, whose walk is about three and a half miles per hour; and when the three-miler has come up to this, then put him along- side ofa four-miler, and so go on increas- ing until he has reached the utmost limits of pace it is possible, The object is to keep him steadily to walk, and not permit him to break it. Trotting horses are improved in the same method; they are kept as strictly to this pace as possible whenever exercised or used, and not allowed to gallop. If they break intoa gallop any time en being urged to do their utmost on the trot, they are instantly checked snd brought back to the trot. But if a horse is naturally a slow walker, it will require con- siderable time and no little patience to°much increase his speed at this gait.
A reiable fast walker must be born so, and the best, quickest, and in fact cheapest way to get at this is to breed him. For this purpose select the fastest-walking stallior to be found, and breed him to the fastest-walking mares obtainable. As a genera! rule these will drop fast-walking cults. The fastestof these when grown should be selected for breeding, and so go on rearing and selecting till the breed is as well established for fast walking as those of fast troiters or racers now are.

Place a heavy farm or cart horse alongside of a fast trotter or racer, and see how very dif- ferent they are in make up; and how im- possible it would be to increase the pace of the orcer, either in a trot er run, to that of tle two latter.
