Some, again, may plead in excuse that attendance at wakes is not under the ban of the Church. They may not certainly be absolutely subject to her penalties— I cannot spexk authoritatively—-but we know that the clergy of the Roman Catholic Charch in Ireland, Scot)and, and America, severely condema and denounce them, and leok upon the still lingering relics of the custom with marked displeasure, and let us hope chat the day is at hand when the Church will assert her Divine authority agaiust the holding of “wakes,” making the practice a breach of Canon Law, subject to the most rigorous ecclesiastical penalties.

Others say that ** wakes” ure confined to the lowest classes. We know mich befter. The growing social feeling against them is without doubt renderiog them unpopular in the cities; bet in the country they are not confined to any one class exclusively. Does the history of the outbreak of the loathsome epidemic in Charloitetown prove that all the at- tendants at the “wike” of Thompson’s ‘child were only the dregs of society ? | Letus trust that when this fime of trial is over vigorous efforts, social and ecclesiastical, will be made to stamp out ‘this abominable practice in city and country. Let every Catholic worthy of the name discounterance the custom, aud let every one, except the immediate relatives of the afflicted family, who remains at a house of mourning Jater than 10 o'clock, or any early bour fixed upon, for other than the legitimate purpose of assisting his stricken frieuds, aud every one who cannot express his respect in a becoming manner, within proper hours, tind that he has lost caste. Then we may rest assured, that if ever we are unfortunately visited by another epidemic, it will not originate under the same circumstances as did the present outbreak of smal)pox.

The Fisheries Department has, within the Jast few days received most encouraging reports from the officers engaged in tha work of collecting ova for the different fish breeding establishments in the Dominion. At the Nowcestle hatchery about 5,000,000 salinon-tront eggs will be laid down; et Sandwich 5,000,000 whitefish eggs; at Magog 50,000. “lunge,” or lake trout eggs. At Tadousac 1,800,000 salmon ova has been co!- lected and the parent fish to the number of 300 liberated without the loss of one, Fifty thousand sea tront ova have also been col- lected at this establishment t for the New- castle hatchery. At Gaspe about 1,000,- 090 salmon ova is caleulatedjupon;at Grand Falis, N. B., on the St. John river, aboat 959,000 salmon egg?; at the Miremichi hatchery, 1,000,000 saimon eggs; at. the Bedtord hatchery, near Halifax, 1,590,000 salmon eggs; at the Sidney hatchery over I,- 000,000 salmon eggs;at Dank river hatchery P. B. Island, about 1,250,000 salmon egas ; and at the Fraser River hatchery, British “olnmbis, the officer in ‘charge cov fidently expects to have between 3,000,000 and $1,009,000 eggs of guinnaé or saw quai sal- mon, thus giving a total ef nearly 68,000,- 000 of eggs of all kinds disiributed among twelve fish-breeding establishments, where they wil] hatch ont during the winter and be ready for distribution early next spring. — Ottawa Citizen, 16th.

English Railways in 1884.

The board of trede returns relating to the railways of the United Kingdom in the year 1884 have been issued. They show that during the 12 months 183 miles cf new zailway were opened--a somewhat rsmalior mileage than that constructed in 1885 and 1882. New capital to the extent of £15,155 600 wes authorized, or consider- ably less than in 1883, but the total of £16,543.000 called up is about the same as in the previous year. Of this, the amoun: thus called up, £5,000 000 was in ordinary, and similar amounts in preference and de- benture stocks. As regards the revenue, the returns show that whilst the goods traffic fell off by £1,031.000, the passenger reeeipts increased £522,000 for the twelve months. The total goods receipts are, however, only £70,000 below the 1882 figures. The in- crease of about 11} millions in the number of passengers carried compares with an in- crease of nearly twenty-nive millions in the case of 1883 over the previous yéar. In the current year to date the passenger re- ceipts also showa decrease, The companies in 1884 were able to effect savings amount- ing to £151,000 in the expenses, which left the net revenue £388,000 below the corres- ponding fignres of the previous year. These net receipts represented 4-16 per cent. on the, paid-up capital, as against 429 per cent. in 1834.

The majority of our lumbermen, says the Fredericton, N. B. Gleaner, have not yet completed «rrengements for their oper- ations in the woods this winter, but they expect in a few weens to have contracts signed.
