Student Achievement Task Force Agree Public Input Essential

CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island, March 21, 2005 — The Education task force, formed in February to recommend ways to improve student achievement met recently to discuss the approaches they will take in the months ahead.

Throughout this process, the 13-member task force agreed that engaging the public as part of the team’s work will be of major importance. They hope to involve the public through a new informative web site that will allow Islanders an opportunity to provide feedback. Additionally, the task force will provide Islanders with opportunities to submit presentations and to attend public forums across the Island.

“The general consensus of the task force at our first meeting was to involve the public as much as possible,” said Richard Kurial, chair. “There will bea variety of ways Islanders can have their voices heard and I encourage interested stakeholders to participate in these opportunities to contribute to the overall work of the task force.”

“‘We would therefore ask that any Islander planning to provide input to please focus their attention on the matter of “student achievement” as outlined in the “terms of reference” given to us by the Minister of Education, Mildred Dover, as a guideline to our work,” Kurial added.

Defeated Candidate Demands A Re-Vote

for Executive VP

position of Executive VP, in order to accord all candidates fair and equal chances for the attainment of this position,” Deighan told the Cadre.

The election results are still unofficial and have to be ratified by Student Council before being declared official. Student Council will meet Tuesday, and could hold a vote to ratify the election results at that meeting.

Deighan has begun circulating a petition around the UPEI campus demanding a revote for the position of Executive VP and he plans on presenting it to Student Council before the meeting on Tuesday.

At this point there remain many more questions than answers in the election controversy; Deighan claims that when he and other people logged _ in to vote, his name was not on the ballot for Executive VP, but he has no hard evidence to prove it. Meanwhile, election CRO Pat Curley claims that the chronological list of ballots cast suggests no candidate was substantially disadvantaged by the alleged glitch. He is, however, faced with the situation that no hard evidence has been discovered to prove this suggestion, or that names were not sporadically left off the list of candidates. With the seriousness of the allegations, the matter must be looked into by both the Student Union and Computer Services to give the student population some solid answers concerning questions surrounding last month’s elections.
