Arntns, Apri] 20.—The Greeks have occupied several positions around Damase. It is feared that a massacre has taken place at Porvesa.

During the bembardment of Salonicaa Turkish torpedo boat sunk the Greek steamer Athens in Salonica gulf. On board the steamer were & number of insurgents and members of various secret societies.

A general panic prevails here. All the vessels are prohibited from leaving the gulf.

Lonpox, April 20.—A despatch to the Chronicle from Athens, dated midnight, says that General Snivenitz, in command of the Greeks at Kiverie, has pushed Edhern Pasha towards Danaci. The suspense here is extreme.

Lonpoy, April 20.—The theory here is that the British Government are using their utmost energy to make a cessation of the conflict.

Lonpon, Apri] 20.—The Times dwells upon the provocation Turkey has received by Geece invading Crete and remaining there and then invading Macedonia. The paper aske what other power in Europe commanding a fine army, would have carried its patience so faras Turkey has done.

Costigan Stands by His Party.

Orrawa, April 20.— The Conservatives who gave this constituency to the grits by their local disputes are reunited. The two clubs were made ove at an enthusiastic meeting held last night.

The statement that the Hon. Jobn Costigan is likely to supsort the Laurier Government seems to have no foundation atall. Hon, Mr. Costigan stated his position in the House of Commons the other day, and stasis by his statement. He then affirmed that his position had under- gone no change, except that he did not expect to take so active a share ip politics as he had done.

Ortawa, April 20.—The Minister of Marine and Fisheries (Hon. Mr. Davies) has prepared a judgment completely re- versing the decision of Captain Smith in the steamer Warwick wreck case. The Minis- ter susperids the captain’s certificate for six months and the second officer’s for three months, :

MEETING, AT BLOOMFIELD. Grits Show the White Feather—Hackett | and Perry Nominated,

Last night there was a meeting held at Bloomfield by M. Hackett’s friends. Not- withstanding the bad state of the roads, the ball was well filled. Mr. Hackett, who was received with great enthusiasm, spoke first, for about au hour, with excellent effect. He scored the Laurier Government for their broken promises and ma‘-admin-— istration, and was followed by Hon. Mr. Ferguson in the same strain, showing te enormous expenditure for the current and next fiscal year, as shown by the Royal Gazette statements and the estimates for 1897 to 1898 recently submitted to pa:- liament,

Mr. McLellan, assistant clerk of the House of Assembly, accepted the invita~

tion to speak in Mr. Perry’s intereste. His remarks drew further replies from Meesrs. Ferguson and Hackett, which

made it apparent that the Grit cause is hopelessly bad.

The meeting was enthusiastically Con- eervative.

The special train this morning had few passengers, till it reached Summerside. Bat at that place and at all stations weat- ward it wae boarded by large numbers of electors, and when it arrived at Alberton it was crowded to its utmost capacity.

Nominations are in, and the candidates are Edward Hackett and S. F, Perry.

The Couservative committee at Alberton on Saturday morning communicated with the Liberal party here, suggetting that a joint meeting be held at the close of pomi- nation, opening at 8 oclock in the evening of the same day.

An answer was received declining the proposal. The Grits have secured Wood- man’s Hall for their meeting. The Con- servatives will hold their meeting at the Court House, immedistely after 2 o’clock.

There is much comment on the lack of courage shown by Premier Peters and bis triends in declining to meet Sexator Fer- gueon'and Mr. Hackett face to face.

Sir,—Some time ago the Patriot news- paper made a brag that the Government had the ferry boats all ready to run on the ferries as soon as navigation opened. Well, navigation has been open now over a week and they haye only made one irip here, and we are now depending on an old lobster boat neither fit to row or sail, in charge of one small boy. The Dominion candidate gota good snub here last elec- tion, and the loce! candidate will yet a greater one at the next election if they think to spite the people for it in this manner. © The Government has three boats anl three or tour crews, so they can have no excuse.

A Montreal despatch reports that the Hon. Israel Tarte has made known to the cour: that he would take advantage of his parliamentarian position and refuse to appear. The brave minister sued W. A. Grenier for libel, but since the defendant’s terrible plea of justification was entered, Tarte has been shivering in his shoes, and would give his bottom dollar to be out of the whole thing. Grenier, however, is bound the case will proceed, and witnesses are being subpocnaed for Tuesday.
