BETTER COMMUNICATION.
Tux Journal bas an article disapproving of a proposition which is being discussed for delaying the steamer Northumberland at Point du Chene in the afternoon, to en- able her to make sharp connection with the afternoon I. C. R. train from St.John, which train is sharply connected with ea- press trains frow Montreal, Toronto, Bos” ton, aod, in fact, with the whole continent. We admit that there is some force in the Journal’s argument that it would be in- judicious to make the ‘connection thie fall, as the change would necessitate some pre- parations, which ceuld not be made now. But the change is one eo completely in the interest of Prince Edward Island that its adoption cannot be long delayed. The ob- jections of the Journal show plainly that our contemporary has been misinformed op the matter, and a little farther consid- eration, will, we are sure, convince the Jo vrnal that the change ie not only desir- able, bat must come. So far from the preseut schedule being satisfactory (o the travelling public, and that no complaint is ~=6meade except concerning the delay at Point du Chene, going from the Island, which the Journaj says the proposed arrangement wil not remedy,—we say, emyphatically, that our present connections are shamefully bad as far as Coming to the Island is eon- cerned. |} —A correspondent writes: If people | would wash out their mouths twice or three | times a day with an antiseptic solution there would not be nearly so much sick- } ness. In the last ten yeare I have never had a cold, sore throat or fever, and I ascribe this immunity solely to the fact that I follow this plan rigidly. There are any number of proprietary antiseptics that are excellent for this purpose, but many more simple agents that are as good or better. One of the best of the latter is carbolic acid. A very weak solution of this gargled and held in the mouth two or three times a day will work wonders. Im- mediately after using it one will find that the mouth feels cleaner. I believe that a great majority of the common throat and lung troubles comes from the lodgment of disease microbes withinjthe mucous mem- branes of the mouth. The free use of antiseptics will kill these germs.
—The Quebec Chronicle observes that, notwithstanding much talk of hard times at Quebec, travel, and particularly sum- mer travel,to that place is increasing. There is to be at once a large addition to the Frontenac hotel, a wing to contain one hundred rooms, and in addition to this “it may be found necessary to make even farther addition’ to this noble nostelry.” The St. John Globe remarks: “Last sum- mer travel everywhere was affected by the hard times, but yet there was a steady in- crease of it ia the Canadian Provinces. As the United States grows in population tra- ve) hitherto will increase, for there wil! be more people to come. Good accommoda- tion for the tourist will always induce him to prolong his stay, and to come back again, The business is one which is like- ly to grow to very extensive proportions, and the people in Canadian towns would do well to encourage it by the best means at their command.” The property owne:s of Charlottetown should make a note of this.

rom a Victoria paper, in which a corres- pondent says: Should you or any of your family be attacked with diphtheria, do not be alarmed, as it is easily and speedily cured without a doctor. When it was rag- ing in England a few years ago, I accom panied Dr. Fields on his rounds to witness the so-called ‘wonderful cures’ he perfor- med, while the patients of others were dropping on all sides. The remedy to be so rapid must be simple. All he took with hins was powder of sulphur an a quill, and with these he cured every pat- | ient without exception. Me puts a table- spoonful of flour of brimestone into wine glass of water,and atirred it with his finger, instead of a spoon, as the sulphur does not readily amalgamate with water. When the sulphur was well mixed he gave it a8 a gargle, and in ten minutes the pat- ient was out of danger. Brimstone kills every species‘of fungus in man, beast, and plant in a few minutes. Instead of spit- ting out the gargle, he recommends the swallowing of it. In extreme cases, in | which he had been called just in the nick | of time, when the fungus was too nearly closing to allow the gargling, he blew the sulphur through a quill into the throat, ' and after the fungus had sunk to allow of | it, then the gargling. "He has never losta | patient from diphtheria. If a patient can- not gargle, takea live coal, put it ona | shovel and sprinkle a spoonful or two of | flour of brimstodeat a time upon it, let the | sufferer inhale it, holding the head over it, j andthe fungus wilidie. If plentifully used, the whole room may be filled almost | to suffocation, the patient can walk about | in it, inhaling the fumes, with doors and windows shut. This mode of fumigating | a room with sulphur has often cured most | violent attacks of cold in the head, chest, etc., at anv time, and is recommended in cass of consumption and asthma.” —

In the course of a letterto Mr. F. H. Arnaud, Manager of the Merchants Bank of Halifax here, Lieut-Col. Arm+trong describes clearly and felicitiously the oper- ation of the “Linotype” used in the office of the St. John Sun. He rays: “The operator touches a key marked with the letter which he wants. When a line is finished the characters are carried along and drawa to a mould which is automatic- ally filled with a metal composition into the top of which the characters are pressed. The characters are then auto matically withdrawn and distributed into the several compartment to which they belong. Another movement of the ma- chine places tie lines of type alongside each other and these are removed in a dozen or 80 at atime and proof is taken on @ hand machine. If any correction is te be made a new line of type must he cast to take the place of the one in which the correction is to be made. When these errors are corrected the forms are locked and the printing is proceeded with in the usual way. The next day the lines of type ere thrown into the melting pot and the metal nsed over andveragain. The Sun uses four machines, costing $3000 each. They are run by steam. I send you the Sun, all of which is set up in this way, except what they call the “scare heads” and display advertisements, You will observe how perfect the spacing of the words is, as compared with other papers set by hand, though for obvious reasons the spacing of one line is no ident tical with others. The spacing is done by wedges which are automatically pressed down sufficiently to fill up with the letters the entire line.”- ‘The linotype is indeed a marvel of ingenuity.

The con- ditions of reunion are easier than are gen- erally imagined. Of course there can be no compromise on faith or morals. The doctrine and moral code that -Christ has left us must remain unchanged, but the christian church can modify her discipline to suit the circumstances of the case.

—Montreal Gazette: The Ontario pro- hibitionists are getting mixed. They can’t tell whether Codlin or Short is their true friend. Old Sir Oliver is all things to all men, and in an indefinite sort of way he has managed to impress the prohibition- ists with the idea that he intends to do great things for them. Mr. Marter, the Opposition leader, is a prohibitionist, but his opinions do not bind his yarty. Mr. Essery, the Conservative candidate for London, 1s also a prohibitionist, while his Liberal opponent, Mr. Hobbs, is an “anti.” So the Loudon prohibitionists are in a quandary. They will probably find their way out of it by voting according to their political opinions. Tne Conservative pro- hibitioniste will vote Conservative, and the Liberal prohibitionists will vote Liber- al, as they generally do when the polling day comes, in spite of much talk of a “solid temperance vote” in the early days of the campaign.

THe Examixer has spoken to the Health Officer and several city physicians regarding the matter,and has been assured that there is no cause for alarm. ‘The only case of diphtheria reported to me” said Health officer Johuson “was that of Peter McCormack. On Wednesday a care of suspected diphtheria in the family of Charles Bell was reported, but the ca:e ul- timately proved to be one of croup. The child has since died. There has not been a case of diphtheria reported since that of Peter McCormack, and the infected houses were yesterday released from quarantine. There is no occasion for alarm on the part of citizens.” “When a case of diphtheria is found to exist in any household,” added the Health Officer, “it is the duty of the householder or the attending physician to immediately report the same to the Board of Health, and any of the responsible par- ties neglecting to de so are liable to a heavy penalty.” Dr. Kelly, whe attended the Bell child, says he reported the case to the Health Officer as “suspected diph- theria; that it was treated as such, and the child has since died.

A Great Republican Victory.
Protectionists Carry the Whole Coun:ry.
New York, Nov. 7.
The Democrats, who have been in ab- solute control of the national governments for some years past, met their doom yes- terday; and have been buried under an overwhelming aaverse bailot. Of the 44 States of the union, 41 elected congres=- men and 21 elected legislators which will choose U.S.Senators. At the hour of writing it looks as though the Republicans had swept the entire country by tremen- dous majorities. The present House of Congress consists of 214 Democrats, 126 Republicans and 12 Populists. The num- ber of Democrats and Republicans has Leen probably reversed by the election of yesterday. Though the actual resuls are not yet known, enough is known to justify the statement that the Republicans will be reinstated in control of both branches of the national government, and that the election of a Republican President is as- sured for 1896.
