He replied: ** The Victoria and Tasman ian leagues invited me, when in England last summer, to goto the Australias and discuss the question in their large cities. Since | wccepted this, the Imperial federa- tion league of Canada has asked me to dis cuss the question in Canada before gomg to Australia; and | am myself exceedingly anxious to get the fullest command possible of Canadian ideas upon the subject, 50 that I may fully represent them in Australia. The relation of Nova Scotia to the Imper ial federation movement is so very import- ant that I had wished to spend a consider able time here studying the question. But having found that it is necessary tv leave San Francisco at an earlier date than [ ex pected, and having to fill several engage- ments in Ontario, 1 find I will only be able to spend one day here.”

** Her geographical position, aud the fact that she posssesses the best naval stations aud the only coal deposits cn the Atlantic coast. These circumstances must give her the almost absolute command of the North Atlantic ; and therefore her imperial im- portance for protecting the greatest fisher- ies in the world, and the greatest line of food traffic in the world cannot be over estimat ed. In any scheme of Imperial enormous importance would the development and protection of stations like Halifax andSydney. Andif the pire held the exclusive use of these, no other great power « ruld pretend to hold a place beside Britain in the Nerth Atlantic. For Britain this is a vital point, largely dependent on external resources for the food of her dense population, and fro the European source of which she would | largely cut off, in case of a great wat theretore dependent upon America.

Rabbit Poaching Condemned.

A correspondent writing trom Souris says that much dissatisfaction, amounting to positive indignation, prevails among the suburban settlers of that place, in conse- quence of the repeated raids made by Souris raShit poachers upon their territory. The snaring of rabbits has always been, during winter months, a source of amusement as well as a source of dainty food supply to the people living upon the outskirts of Souris village; but this season the amuse- ment or business of snaring rabbits has, owing to the cause above stated, been at- tended with very little amusement or profit. it is not, of course, alleged that many rab- bits are actually killed by the Souris sports- men, (in fact it is triumphantly stated that only one rabbit has been brought to Souris this winter, and that specimen bore unm s- takable evidence of having come [to its death by strangulation), but the real griev- ance is that the worry and excitement oc- casioued by their sportsmen with their dogs and guns make these timid little animals wild and unsnarable. If the Souris hunts- man would only leave their dogs at home, ne trouble would be apprehen led, nor would the supply of rabbits diminish in a very marked degree. But the dogs do the mischief, and threats are freely indulged in by these injured people, which do not alto- gether predict a remarkable instance of longevity in the case of a certain dog
