The Halifax Herald recently had a dis- cussion with one of its contemporaries upon farmers’ protection, and the other day had the following to say. We mend its remarks to the thoughtful peru- sal of our readers :—

“ Our neighbor asserts that protection is injurious to farmers. How does it prove it? It does not attempt to prove it. It merely says there is no dispute about it, for nobody should be silly enough to as- sert it. Who are they who axsert it? Not the farmers themselves. and they are the people who understand and are inter- ested inthe matter. When the tariff re vision was brought down, it was found that the new agricultural schedule afford ed slightly less protection on an item or two than was afforded by the old tariff. What was the result? The farmers and those who undertook to act specialiy for them objected firmly against reduction of the farmer’s protection. with the result that in several cases the old specific duties were restored, and the protection to our farmers fully continued. Of course this does not please the Grit free trader who insists upon “the necessaries of life,” except such articles as tea, coffee and sugar being on the free list, and as the food products of our farms are all “necessaries of life,” the Grit free trad- er would afford them no protection at all, but wonld expose them to all the compe- tition of their dear neighbore under the stars and stripes! Our farmers, however, are not to be fooled so easily as our con- temporary thinks; they highly value the protection which the present policy gives them, and are wisely ready to resent any attempt to take it from them. Their at- titude in this respect may be seen in the late tariff revision. In the agricultural schedule it will be noted that the specific duties have been retained to a marked de-

gree. Thus we have—live hogs, 14 cents

a pound; meat in barrels, 2 cents; fresh meats, 3 cents; lard 2 cents; eggs 5 cents

a dozen; butter, 4 cents a pound; cheese, 3 cents; condensed milk, 3 cents; apples, 40 cents a barrel; buckwheat, oats, peas and rye, 10 cents a bushel; beans, wheat and potatoes, 15 cents; gooseberries, ,rasp- berries, strawberries and other small iruits, 2 cents a pound; and so on. Thus it will be seen that the Canadian farmers home market is well protected from being made a dumping ground for the excessive production of our neighbors; and that the protection afforded him by the agricul- tural schedule varies from 25 per cent. to 50 per cent. or more, or fully as high in protection as is afforded to ano other inter- est by any other schedule.”

When he announced in Parlia- ment that a profitable trade might be done in that product of the farm between Canada and Britain, the men sitting op- posite to him—accordinug to their news- yapers—grew merry at his stupidity Well, notwithstanding these sneers and merry naking, the trade was opened up, and, as those who keep posted upon such matters know, the trade is a promising one, and fully justifies Mr. Foster’s state ments at the refer to. This is now being learned even by the grit press; and in its issue of August 17th the Cay- uga Advocate has this to say :

“Canadian hay, we are told, is now a permanent article in the English market. The trade was opened up at a time when there was an extraordinary demand for roreign hay owing to the failure of crops at home, and that it should be continued even when the English yield is normal is highly satisfactory to Canada.”

The advocate adds that with proper care in producing and shipping, Canadians may yet do a profitable trade with Eng- land in hay. This is just exactly what the Minister of Finance said some years ago; but the grit press sneered at hii, as we have said, hive

A number of incendiary fires had occur- red in the vicivity of Millington, which negro squatters were suspected of originat ing, as there was adispute between the squatters and white people regarding the proprietorship of land.

The white settlers employed a privé ate detective of Memphis to discover the incen- diaries. This man, W. T. Richardson, ar- rested six negroes around Millington on blank warrants, handcuffed them together and was conveving them to Memphis when the party was waylaid by fifty white men, who shot the six unarmed, handcuffed and helpless negroes to death.

There was no proof whatever that the negroes were v .tilty of crime. The detective. Richardson, bad previously arrested two of the colored men, and his charges against them could not be sustained in court. He was working for private pay and was like

ly to arrest somebody, right or wrong, merely to earn the money. Without proof of guilt, without trial, the six defenceless

negroes were murdered in cold blood, not for the crime of rape, which white south evners usually allege as an all sufficient excuse for lynching, but on the mere sus- picion of incendiarism, a comparatively minor crime.

By taking advantage of the good sense dis splayed by a horse, the Chie ago police recovered $2 2 000 worth of stolen property, caught the thieves and added to the history of detective work one of the neatest cap tures that had been made ip this city in a long time. The property reporte: 1 stolen consisted of a wagon and a horse, the wagon containing a lot of various articles. The idea was conceived of having the horse, that was first recovered from th thieves put into harness and given free rein, in the hope that it might go to the barn where it belonged This idea was put into execution. After a long journey the horse drew up at a barn in the reat of Wabash Avenue about Thirtieth Street Here the officera concealed themselves and
