THE INFLUENCE OF FORESTB 0N CLIMATES.

Tn: cutting down and burning of largcl forests has in this Island been very ex- tensively carried on during the past few years. In many parts of the Island ﬁre wood is very scarce. \Ve notice that many farm: near Charlottetown are on- tirely without any wood. arid their own» or: are compelled to haul their wood some ten or fifteen miles. In a few years time we believe that many farmers will have to use cosl instead of wood. so great will be the scarcity of wood. if the wholeszle cutting and burning is allowed that is now practiced. Some personK will set fire to a no is. quite regardless of the consequence it may do to their neighbors. A farmer up West told u> the other day that last summer he lost about £200 worth of timber by the care lessncss ofa neighbor in setting fire to a patch of woods. The second paragraph refers to thc Mauritius, and is in the following terms :

During the past ﬁve years the Meteor-- ological Society of Mauritius have ex— tended their systcm ofol)servalions so as to include twuuty-two stations where the rain-fall is registered. Though the time is comparatively short since the system was adopted. some remarkable results have been obtained. At Clurry. a placc in the south-east of the island. bordering on mountains and forests. the total raiirA fall was. in 1866, more than 102 inches; at Gros Callioux. sixteen miles distant to the north-west. the rain-fall in thr- same year Was. omitting decimals. tliirtyu six inches. These figures give the high. est and lowest quantity registered in the year. Another fact which has become apparent seems to strengthen the theory much discussed of late, which shows a dependence between rain fall and forests. In some parts of the Island. only a fun years ago. a dry cloudless day was of rare occurrence; whereas dry days arr- now frrquent. and the colic-fields suffer from drought. Some of the rivers arr much diminished in volume. and somr streams have almost entirely disappeared lakes and marshes are drying up; in con- sequence of which the yield of sugar cane has decreased. and on some estates the cultivation has been Lbandoucd Othcrestatcs on tho high ground near the edge of the forests. which were for mcrly considered too cold and wet for a good crop of canes, are now very pro- ductive. lot with a cunt nuance of thr- carisc. it is believed that they too will become subject to tho srrnic effect. It should never bt' forgotten that if forests have no other effect they intercept some portion of the rain. and assist in preserving the humid- ity of the soil. When exposed to tilt full glare of the sun. springs and rivers dry up rapidly.
