Montague is seen as ideal location for new industry

More than $100,000 was spent , fm the Montague area on new homes and renovating during the past year with excel- lent prospects in evidence for greater expansion in 1962. This amount was in addition to the cost of a new elementary school built at a cost of $170,000.

Although the latest census did sot show much increase in population for the town proper, a definite increase has been noted in the area bordering the town’s .imits.

The town with its many. chur- ches, excellent schools, skating and curling rinks, theatre, ar- mouries, modern bakery, cem- ent block plant, feed milis, along with a federa! building, housing RCMP headquarters, fisheries and customs offices, makes Montague an ideal loca- tion for additional _ business firms.

The town hall contains the telephone office, public health office and fire hall as well as the council chambers. AGGRESSIVE COUNCIL

At the present time the town is fortunate in having the most aggressive town council in a number of years. Councillors in- elude a druggist, veterinarian, high school principal, a retired businessman, the owner of a farm machinery business and a man who owns and operates pos- sibly the largest hoggery in the province.

The year saw a new, modern motel constructed at Pooie’s Corner; continued expansion and improvements at Brudenell Park, and the purchase of the Gordon property adjacent to the park for use as a golf course. These additions will lure even more tourists to this area in future years.

As usual large number of vi- sitors saw Moore’s Sanctuary, historic Brudenell Island and Brudenell Point.

Adding impetus to the growth of the tourist industry in 1962 will be the establishment of ano- ther park and fishing area at Sutherland’s Stream, and the in- auguration of a boat club.

The property at Sutherland’s Stream was purchased by the town for use as a fishing and park area while the boat club will be established by Wendall MacMillan.

Mr. MacMillan recently pur- chased a waterfront property in Montague and will open his boat club this summer. He owns a@ number of boats all govern- ment approved and. all staffed by qualified skippers. He will conduct boating tours, deep sea fishing, family outings, water skiing and other events.

With the advent of the region- al auditorium. Many students for the first time have experien- ced the pleasure of playing their first basketball game, their first lesson in tumbling and pyra- mid building, and all the other indoor sports which are taught this year for the first time in this area.

Montague also has one of the most active curling clubs in the province and it has sent repre- sentatives to Dominion Play- downs in the MacDonald Brier, and three times to the Domin- ion Legion playdowns.

The Montague schools have al- ways placed high in Provincial Sport meets and it is felt that now a sports instructor is avail- able, their record will become even better.
