NEW YORK. Oct. 3 -(OP) - Gen. Dwight D. Elsen ower de- clared today" that there is 0 easy way out of the Korean wa .

The Republican presidential candidate, hitting back at Demo- cratic charges that he is trying to find an "easy" solution to the problem of Korea. said:

"No man has ever heard me say there is an easy way out of the Korean war. It's a long, hard way."

He spoke in New York City as the candidates and their support- ers made a last-lap drive for votes before Tuesday's election when the American people choose the man who will sit in the white liouse for the next four years.

They also elect a new congress but that has almost been lost sight of in this campaign, one of the most turbulent of the century.

The Dominant Theme

It seemed ' ossible after two hard months but the oratory swell- ed with whirlwind tours by elect- ion leaders going on in every part of the country. With only four days remaining. the dominant theme still was Korea-who is re- sponsible for it and how it can be ended.

Eisenhower, who has devoted three days to New York City in a drive for the state's 45 electoral votes-the victor in this city of 8,- 000,000 persons usually carries the state-gathered hundreds ' of thousands about him as he stopped to make one speech after another.

But so did the Dcmocrats' Adlai E. Stevenson in making the same tour earlier this weck...there was no indication which way the city will-swing. .

In an illusion to. stevensonis as- sertion that the heart of the Kor- ean problem is not in Korea but in Moscow, Eisenhower said the late President Roosevelt visited him at the front in the second World War "and he didn't go to Berlin."

Eisenhower is pledged to go to Korea. if elected, to see what can be done to bring peace. .

Stevenson meantime was attack- ing Eisenhower, in Pennsylvania, a .state which has 32 electoral votes and is of prime importance in the election.

The Democratic nominee credit- ed the Truman administration with these measures:

Aid that saved Greece and Tur- key from Communism; theiMar- shall Plan; a flrm,stand against the Russians in Berlin: the North Atlantic Treaty to band together the free peoples of Europe; adop- tion of the mutual security pro- gram to arm free countries against Communism.

The Republicans "fought every one of these measures." he said.

Truman Goes All-Out

Those were the high points of another day in the campaign with no end seemingly in sight in the torrent of words that has been poured forth in attempts to sway the voters. What the voter thought about it all won't be known until Tuesday.

OTTAWA, Oct. 30 --(CP)--- Lib- eral women today sought a bigger part in politics and government.

That was the main theme of re- ports presented at the biennial meeting of the national federation of liberal women, ending a two- day session here after the annual meeting of the national liberal federation.

Quebec's liberal women were particularly strong in asking a bigger role for their sex in politic- al affairs. The 400-woman conven- tion itself also took note of the feminine angle by calling for the use of historically-known cana- adian women on stamps.

Destroyer. Frigates To Visit Australia

VICTORIA. Oct. 30-(CP)-The destroyer Sioux and frlgates Bea- con Hill and Antigonlsh will leave their Esqulmait base in January for an 11-week training cruise to Australia, it was reported here to- day.

SEOUL, Friday, Oct. 31 - (AP) - Allied troops today won back the crest of Triangle Hill in Central Korea less thannine hours after overwhelming numbers of Chinese Reds had seized it.

The reoccupaticn. a recovery from the Allies' worst setback in 18 days of battle, was reported at 11 am. W a U. 5. Eighth Army officer.

The earlier Red attack had hm- ken through Allied lines so swift- ly that an Allied company was trapped on the height.

Bitter hand-to-hand fighting not only rewon the crest but also car- ried reinforcements to the once trapped company which then opened a counter-attack.

The Onslaught by 2.000 Chinese was pressed relentlessly through an Allied artillery barrage so withering that one of three at- tacking Red battalions was cut to pieces and withdrew.

AP correspondent John Rand- olph at the front said the loss of Triangle posed a major threat to the western flank of the Allies on nearby Sniper Ridge which it overlooks. The Reds hit Sniper with a light attack.

But Allied troops held pinpoint I-Iill after the rocky peak had changed hands 12 times during a day of blopdy fighting. The hub. which dominates Sniper Ridge on the right flank of a two-mile dent in Communist lines near Kumhwa. has been in the middle of the fighting.

Theohinese seized the summit of Triangle Hill at 2 a. m.. then pressed on south. Confused fight- ing was in porgress at the bass of the Triangle in the pre-dawn dsrkness.

The Allies had held .- Triangle Bill since U. 8. troops seised it Oct. 15, despite all the fury of Red counterattscks and violent artil- lery tbarrages.

Agriculture Minister Sherwood asked the 60 delegates attending the two-day conference for in- creased support for the provincial and national 'association's fight against cheap imitations of dairy products.

He said that unless the dairy industry stepped up its advertis- ing campaigns the producers. manufacturers and distributors would eventually have to bow be- fore "the comblned pressure 'of misinformed public opinion and the influence of the great all in- terests.

"Our dairy farmers," he said, "cannot continue to produce dairy products in the face of competition from world markets, prices, and cheap imitations made from foreign raw materials when they have to buy manufac- tured goods that are produced by our industries behind protective tariff walls. If protection is right for one industry it is right for all."

To Remove Gui Dam. Imnledialely

OTTAWA, Oct. 30 - (CF) Removal of Out Dam, blamed by some for destructively-high wa- ter levels in the Great Lakes, is expected to start early next week, it was learned today.

The government committed it- self to removing the dam in con- junction with the construction the St. Lawrence seaway and it awarded a contract for eliminating the dam after yesterday's decision of the International Joint Com- mission, authorizing the hydro de- velopment of the waterway.

Canadian Dredge and Dock Com- pany of Toronto with the pro- viso that the dam be removed by Jan. 15, 1053.- , Earlier, government officials had said that the dam would have to be removed in gradual stages in order to prevent flooding in the lower regions of the at. Lawrence around Montreal.

However, they said today that completing the job in the winter will eliminate flood dangers.

The Transport Department did not announce the amount of the contract awarded the Toronto companypbut it was understood to be about 3275.000.

The dam is located below Pres- cott. ont., stretching between Adams Island on the Canadian aide to Galop Island on the U. s. side. It was built by Canada in 1901 to protect water level: in the river canal system.

MON'I'REAL, Oct. 30 - (OP) - Orvllle Blevwright Tyndale, 65, Associate Chief Justice of the Que- bec Superior Court and former Chancellor of McGill University, died at the Montreal Neurological Institute last night from a cerebral haemorrhage.

The funeral will be held Saturday at St. Matthias Church, West- mount.

He was the first graduate of Mr- Gill to become its chancellor and retired from the post last May after serving five years. He was succeeded by B. C. Gardner, pres- idfnt of the Royal Bank of Can- a an.

Associate Chief Justice Tyndale joined the armed forces after he was admitted to the Quebec Bar. He was gazetted a lieutenant in the 5th Overseas University Com- pany and joined the Princess Patrlcia'a Canadian Light Infantry in June, 1916.

In the same year he was wound- ed and returned to Canada where he served on the headquarters staff, Ottawa until discharge in 1918 with the rank of Brevet Ma- jor. i

He became a. lecturer at McGill in N19. After two years he wu appointed to the McGill staff on a full-time basis, lecturing in the lfaculties of arts and sciences and aw.

DRUMHELLER, Alta. Oct. 30-, (CF)-Viggo Petersen, 56, of Drum- heller was convicted by a jury to- day of the murder of his wife and was sentenced to be hanged next Jan. 21.

Mrs. Petersen was found dead in her apartment am Sept. 10. Her husband in another room was found bleeding from a gashed throat and wrists.

Dr. A.J. Walker of Drumheller testified that Petersen admitted killing his wife because she was mentally defective.

Winnipeg Man Gets 30-Year Term

WINNIPEG. Oct. 30 - (CF)- Alexander Zakopisc. 32, yesterday was sentenced to 30 years in pris- on aiier conviction by an asslze court jury of charges of attempt- ed mur-er, shooting with intent and armed robbery.

The charges were laid in con- nection with a Winnipeg bank holdup and subsequent gun battle.

Canada's External Affairs Min- ister is carrying out the job of president of the United Nations General Assembly with an objec- tivity seldom achieved by prev- ious presidents.

While some of his procedural rulings as president have come under Russian fire, American de- legates have also taken him to task on some of his opinions about handling of U. N. business, At the outset of his presidency. Pearson emphasized that his conduct of the post. would be without "pre- judice or partiality."

any private negotiations here to seek a way out 'of the Korean deadlock.

It is not a question of Pearson dealing directly with the Russians but possibly of acting as an in- termediary through "third party" countries such as India.

A slight easing in the situation regarding the shortage of refriger- ator cars to handle the potato movement is reported by Canadian National Railway officials here. Approximately 100 more cars are on the way and should arrive for loading on the weekeml, and a

steady inward flow is expected from now on. One factor entering into the

shortage is the premature arrival of cold weather. Over the years this has not, generally occurred until the second week in November and until then. it has always been practicable to ship potatoes in or- dinary paperllned box cars. This may still be done this year to certain destinations.
