BUMEROUS VERSES ON THE COMET WRITTEN ABOUT 40 YEARS AQgo.

About forty years ago, when the astron- omers had predicted the appearance of the comet which came within the observation of the people of our earth in 1843, Dr, Oliver Wendell Holwes lelighted the people of that day and generation with the following humorous poem, which served an excellent purpose at the time to allay the fears of the timid, and furnis! to these whe could sentiment which with an excellent moral lesson:

The comet ! he is on his way, And ‘singing as lie flies;

The whizzing planets shrink before The spectre of the skies.

Ah ! well may rege! orbs turn blue And satellites t: rn pale;

Ten million cubic niles ef head, Ten billion leagues of tail !

On, on by whistling spheres of light He flashes and he flames ;

He turns not to the left nor rigit, He asks them net their names.

One spurn from his demoniac heel— Away, away they fly,

Where darkness miyht be bottled up And sold for ‘‘ Tyrian dye.”

And what would happen to the land, And how would look the sea, If in the bearded devil's path Our earth should chance to be? Foll hot and high te sea would boil, Full red the forests gleam ; Methought I saw and heard it all In a dyspeptic dream !

They answered not, but all the while The brakes went up and dewn.

I saw nine geese upon the wing Teward the frozen pele,

And every mother’s gosling fell Crisped to a crackling coal.

Strange sights ! Strange sounds! dream ? Its memory haunts me still, The steaming sea, the crimson glare, That wreathed each woeded hill; Stranger ! if threugh the reeling brain Such midnight visions sweep, Spare, spare, 0, spare thy evening meal, And sweet shail be thy sleep !
