A Big Mortgage.

New Yorx, May 24.—The largest morigege recorded in the history or Suf- folk county was filed today iu the office of the county clerk at Rivershead, L.I, It is for $45,000,000, given by the Long Island railroad in favor of the U. 8. Mort- gage and Trust Company as trustees. Attached to the mortgage are 4509 $50 revenue stamps, toaking a total of $22,500. The mortgage covers all the property of the railroad. The railroad intends to make extensive improvements and caocel ontstanding bonds. The mertgage is given to protect the new bonds ise ued for these improvements.

Hairax, May 23.—The Imperial au- thorities have decided to construct another fortrera bere. It will be located at a point near Herring Cove head, southof York redoubi, facing the sea. The new fort will ccatain quick firing batteries, with the latest type ot armament. It has been decided to remodel a large portion of the interior of Yerk redoubt for new batteries to be placed there. ‘The old eighteen and twelve ton guns will be snipped to Que- Lec for defence purposes.
