5. There is no loss in feeding a cattle beast well upon a variety of materials for the sake of manure alone.

6. Farm-yard manure from well-fed catile, three years old, is worth an average of $2.30 per ton.

7. A three-year old cattle beast, well fed, will give at least one ton of manure every month of winter.

8. No cattle beast whatever will pay for the direct increase to its weight from the consumption of any kind or quantity of food.

9. On an average it costs twelve cents for every additional pound of flesh added to the weight of a two or three-year old fatten- ing steer.

10. In Canada the market value of store cattle can be increased thirty-six per cent. during six months of finishing by good feeding.

11. In order to secure a safe profit, no store cattle beast, well done to, can be sold at less than four and one-half cents per pound, live weight.

12 In the fattening of wethers, to finish as shearings, the Cotswold and Leicester grades can be made up to 200 pounds, the Oxford Down 180 pounds, and the Ox- ford Down, grade, 160 pounds each, live weight.

13. A cow wintered upon two tons and a half of hay will produce rot far from five tons of manure, provided that she is well littered and none of the excrements be wasted.

The Acting Consul-General in Egypt telegraphs that his records ard personal effects are lost. All the American citizens are saved. General Stone's family iusisted on remaining in Cairo. Their fate is un- known. It is stated that the Department is advised by the Acting Consul-General of the United States in Egypt that he has moved from Cairo to Alexandria. It is understood that whatever Americans remain in the interior of Egypt are some. distance in the rear of Arabi army, and it is be- lieved they have not yet suffered.

In consequence of a series of smal] aque- ducts, well known to all Eastern nations, the svil in the suburbs of Alexandria has been fertilized to such a degree that many fruits and plants grow in abundance. Within a stone’s throw of the Alexandrian citade! wall there are excellent gardens, wherein grow oranges, citrons, plantains (corresponding with the American banana), figs, and cocoanuts; and as for flowers, no dusky-haired maiden of the city need have gone without an ornament, for there grew roses, red and white oleanders, end the brilliant scarlet blossoms of the pome- granate in abundance within a half-hour’s walk of her residence. These gardens, from which certain enterprising Arabs earned a considerable annual revenue, were due, as regards their fertility, toe tiny aqueducts, laid between artificial embank- ments about three feet high, from the Mahmoudieh Canal to the spots in which they were required.

Breach Or Promise Case 1x Moncton. -—The case of Emma Boyd, vs. Jacob Van Baskirx, for breach of promise, will be tried at this sitting of the Westmoreland Cireuit Court. The plaintiff sues to recover the sum of $5.000 damages for breach of promise. The defendant, who is a resident of Moncton, is a respectable married man and worth considerable money. He denies that he ever promised to marry Miss Boyd, and asserts that ex- cept a friendly ccnversation he never had any talk with her. The plaintiff claims that the defendant did propose and promise to marry her, and asked her mother’s con- sent to the marriage, and that there was a time set for it to take place, etc. The case excites. much talk in Moncton as the time for the trial draws near. Able counsel has ‘been engaged on both sides.

Inspector Cudlip, of the Customs De- partment, paid Mcnacton an official visit. on Wednesday last. He had reason to suspect stauggling operations, and acting on in- formation, accompanied by Mr. Binney of the local service anc an officer’ from St. John, then took possession of the stock of jewelry, etc., of a local dealer.
