Hap SEVENTEEN CHILDREN.—A _ few days ago Mrs. Sophie Courrier, of Pembroke, Ont., while in a state of melancholy, threw herself out of a window and died instantly from the blow. Her neck was broken in the fall, and the body was otherwise injured. She was the nother of seventeen children.

Broke Tete Promise.—A Halifax des- patch says: Three years ago the Imperial military authorities led the city to believe they would transfer free an eligible location in the centre of the city, now used as a coal shed, to the city as a site for a market. Now the military authorities demand $25,000 for the land.

Witt Keee Him Comrortrasly.-—James Nixon, of St. Joho, a few davs ago received the joyful tidings from Washington that he will shortly become the possessor of $3,888 in hard cash, and receive $12 per month during the remainder of his life asa pension. Mr. Nixon is now 77 years old, and has for some time past been, on account of illness, prevent- ed from doing active work. The pension is on account of his son who was killed in the war.

For BaLpuEeADED Persons.—A well-known European physician professes to have discov- ered ‘the bascilius, which causes baldness. These bacilli, according to Dr. Gaymoune, in- vades the hair follicles, and make them so brittle that they break off. If the mischief has not gone too far the bacilli may~he exter- minated by smearing the hair—or the place where the hair had been in happier days— with a mixture consisting of codliver oil and the juice of onions.

A Sap Occurrence —The North Sydney Herald says: A very sad aecident, by which Freddie, the two-year-old child of Chas, snd Mary Hurlburt, lost his life, occurred last Thursday. The young one had been playing near the open stove with a news- paper. While so doing the paper caught fire, igniting the child’s clothing, and _be- fore the flames could be extinguished, the child was fatally burned. The poor little one lived until Thursday night, suffering intense pain until it died, It was a very sad occurrence, particularly as Mrs. Huri- burt was only here on a visit to her former home.

Sap State or Arrarrs.—Another la- mentable account of destitution comes from Dakota. A despatch under date of Dec. 7, comes from Yankton, Southern Dakota, to the New York Herald says: Gov. Mellette arrived to-day fromthe scenes of destitu- tion in Miner County. His accounts of the suffering there make it greater than previous reports. He says there are 600 families on his list of absulutely destitute in Miner County, and that many of these people will die if relief is not provided. The Governor is making an effort in the counties along the Missouri River, where the crops were abundant, to secure aid. The people, he says, need food, grain cloth- ing and fuel, and he asks for liberal contri- butions.

A Crosk Transaction.—Some time ago Alex. Close, of St. John, N. B, received a letter from Colorado, enclosing a draft for $1800. Mr. Close did not know who sent this draft, but, supposing it to be from a half brother out West, he had it eashed and proceeded to put the money where it would do the most good. All went well untila day or two ago, when Alex. Close, John’s, P. Q, arrived inf the city, accompanied by a legal gentleman, and called upon his namesake. The visiting Mr. Close, explained that the $1800 draft was intended for him, and was his share of jthe proceeds of the scle of a mine in ‘Colorado in which he was interested. The St. Jokn Mr. Ciose had only $725 of the amount left, which he handed over.

The Heartlessness of Reyalty. SEVEN THOUSAND SOLDIERS CLEARED SNOW FOR AUSTRIA’S EMPRESS.

The movements of royal personages in | Europe last week were greatly hampered by the unfeeling and disrespectful weather. Austria and Hungary are underneath three feet of snow, and drifts have blocked the railroads and hghways. In Vienna 5,000 laborers constantly at work have managed to keep the more important thoroughfares reasonably clear, but the price of food has risen 20 to 30 per cent. Empress Elizabeth but for some inscru- table reason she expressed a wish to take a | trip from her castle at Miramer to Vienna. Nothing could be more inconsiderate or less opportune, but her wish was law, and the civiland military authorities took prompt measures to obey. The line from Miramar was blocked, and every station was crowded with shivering, half-starving, snowed-up passengers. Seven thousand soldiers and railway men were; however, set to work, the line sufti- ciently to allow the passage of the Imperial train. It proceeded very slowly, and the ofticials in charge were in constant dread of an accident. As the train passed through

York redoubt has been thoroughly inspected ; the weak places have been de- tected and made »strong; the guns have been tested, and amy gun found defective in the slightest degree has been condemn- ed, As a result of the investigation of York oe which.overlooks the mouth of the harbor»anany changes have been made, Workmen, both military and civi- lian, have during the summer been activel engaged strengthening the forts. The roads and surroundings ii the vicinity of this fort have beeu carefully examined, and the rifle pits around the main wall of the fott have been put in order and altered so that rifles may be fired from any position. Special attention has also been paid to al! the other fortifications.
