Tuk Premier of Canada was quietly and civilly questioned by some of the electors regarding his steel rail purchase. The ‘answers of the Premier were evasive and were given ina bad tempered, curt, sar- castic and insolent tone. The tax-payers of this Dominion have a right to learn from the man who takes their money and spends it extravagantly and without permission of Parliament why he did so.

Tue Patrio! has the following conundrum : ‘* Hew much apiece does a special train of six cars cost, when divided among the twenty-two passengers who occupied its seats?’ We re- ply by saying that every man who did go to ‘Tracadlie by the special, paid lis fare. We have it from good authority, that those who went te Georgetown to swell the number of MeKenzie’s supporters, were carried at the country’s expense, and paid nothing ‘‘apiece.” Deny it if you dare!

He wildly gesticulated; he rolled up his sleeves; he was even prepared to act the blackguard and settle disputes by muscular strength. He was backed up by the Lawsons, Donald Farquharson, Hon. John Robertson and apack of hungry Grit Bashi Bazouks pre- pared to fight for the bone from which they have been sucking marrow for the last five years,

Unrreo Temperance Association.—The annual session of the National Lodge of this influential body will, we are informed, open at Halifax, N. S., on the 30th inst. An excellent opportunity will thus be afforded our temperance friends of visiting the flourishing capital of the neighboring Province, and at the same time seeing and conversing with their fellow-laborers in the temperance field from all parts of the Do- minion. Further particulars will be com- munievted, on application, to J. W. Morri- son, Esq., of this city.

The Premier in Georgetown. \ RESIDENT'S AC JOUNT. T'o the Kklitor of the Ewcaminer :—

Sie,—On Thursday evening Jast, a telegram was received by one of our most corpulent of Grit citizens, stating that the leader of that body-—the Premier of Canada. —would address the electors of King’s County, at 7 o'clock, p. m., on Saturday, in the Drill Shed of this town.

On the evening of that day, a telegram was received, representing that the str. ‘* Albert had left Pictou at 3 p.m., with Hons, A. Me- Kenzie and R. J. Cartwright on board. At seven o'clock, a throng of hungry officials were on the Queen’s Wharf to receive their chiet tain; but not until after 10 o’clock did the * Albert” put in an appearance. Arriving at the Wharf, three cheers were proposed for the Premier by John McCormack, of Cardigan bridge, the ingenious builder of the Souris Hospital, and taken up by the hungry offiicials aforesaid. Three ringing cheers were then given to Sir John Mel ronald, Again the Grits cheered Cartwright faintly, and the Liberal. Conservatives cheered ‘Tupper and_ ‘I illey lustily. Then all repaired to the Drill Shed to hear the defence made by the master of the sinking ship. ‘The Premier began his address about 10.30, and spoke for upwards of an hour, with a number _of interruptions, by questions, cries of steel rails, ete. ‘Then Cartwright came forward and was greeted with ‘What about your insult to the Highlanders,” etc. These questions did not appear to suit the taste of the Minister of Finance. His answer to the tirst was that he was only joking,” but this did not suflice. The audience could not swallow such an un- truth, and the popular impression 1s that Cartwright is a clever corraptionist. His speech lasted until Sunday morning, thus clos- ing out from speaking all Liberal-Conservat- ives. But had there been ample time for them to do so, the McKenzie fort would have been actually besieged. The meeting closed by the cheering of McKenzie bythe Grits and three monster cheers for Sir John A. McDonald. None of the Liberal Conservative candidates could attend on account of the pie-nic at Tracadic. ‘The cool reception ed to the Premier at this

NEWS BY TELECRAPH.

Bern, Aug. 17.

Kimil Hoedel, who attempted to assassin- ate the Emperor William on May 11th, was beheaded yesterday. When informed that his execution was fixed upon he became deathly pale. He repulsed the ministrations of the chaplain, declaring them useless, as it would take years to convert him. Fifty persons, including oflicials, judges, police and twelve citizens, attended the execution, which is generally approved. Official notice of the execution was posted throughout the city as a warning. It required but a single stroke of the axe to decapitate Hoedel. The remains were immediately buried.

Lonpon, Aug. 17.

It is stated that Gormany is ready to join in active mediation in favor of the rectitica- tion of the Greek frontier, and has dis- patched some men-of-war to Greek waters as a demonstration.

_ Special dispatches from Rome assert that Greece has also received the promise of the moral support of Italy.

It is stated at Rustchuk that the Russian army of cbhservation of 80,000 men will be stationed in Bessarabia until the result of the changes south of the Danube is known.

Austria has decided upon the immediate further mobilization of troops.

t is feared that the pacification of Bosnia will take six weeks or two months.

A Vienna dispatch says that the Porte’s understood support of the Bosnians has caused a change of relations with Austria which, a short time ago, was deemed im. possible.

Sr. Pererspurc, Aug. 17.

The assassins of General Mozentnow fired upon General Markenoff, the chief of the gens @armes who offered to arrest the assas- sins after they stabbed the chief of police. From this circumstance arose the report that Mozentnow was killed by a_ pistol shot.

Vienna, Aug. 18.

A telegram from headquarters, dated 20th, says :—‘‘ The Austrian division were attacked on Friday morning near Dabaj, on the right banks of the river Bosnia, bya considerable force of the insurgents. All assaults were repulsed, but the Austrians suffered heavily.”

Beri, Aug. 18.

The ‘* Post” announces that the Euro- pean Commission, to re-organize Roumelia, is to meet at Constantinople on the 13th of September. The Commission for the reor- ganization of Bulgaria is to meet on the same day.

Betorape, Aug. 18. { The Servian Minister of Finance is nego- tiating with Paris bankers for a loan of 24,- 000,000 francs to redeem war debts.

it is a well-know fact that for many years post the prices of other Cape Breton coals have yeen regulated by the rates tixed for SYDNEY COAL; but while it is true that other coals, to get a sale at all, have been pressed on the market at various prices under the current rate of SYDNEY COAL, it is no less true that, taking into account the superior lasting qualities of SYDNEY COAL when compared with other Cape Breton coals, the advantage, both as to economy and comvenience, is in favor of SYDNEY COAL, even at a much higher price.

The General Mining Association (Limited) regret that they should again have to caution the Public against the attempts being made from time to time to induce them to buy in- ferior coals purporting to be ‘*‘ EQUAL TO SYDNEY,” “SUPERIOR ‘TO SYDNEY,” etc., etc., while some yet more unscrupulous vendors have not hesitated to advertise their coal as SYDNEY COAL (from some designated locality). All these efforts to sell coal by such means are only so many admissions on the part of those who make them of the sranparp character of SYDNEY COAL.
