Miss Nora Longworth returned last week from a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Joe O'Brien, Arcadia, Cali- fornia, where she spent some time. Arcadia is a short distance from Santa Anita track. Miss Longwprth h a keen horsewoman and has been one of the Maritimes leading riders, taking part in competitions at Old Home Weeks Horse Shows and other centres. She is also a great admirer of harness horses and is a very good judge of form, breeding and knows considerable about training. For several years she has noticed Joe O'Brien‘s style of reinamanship which placed him at the head of Maritime drivers and she is also a friend of Mrs. O'Brien. Because of this friendship Miss Long-worth was enabled to witch the training of the horses, Team the procedure! of the race track officials and secure the in- formation which we give to our readers.

Santa Anita race track was built originally for the runners and cost several million dollars and is al- most the last word in beauty, land- scaping, profusion of flowers, mag- nificent buildings, most modern race track, sound equipment and all that thought could devise to put on a race meeting styled to the ideals of particular fans. Over 800 horses were stabled there with an estimated 80 percent of the fastest trotters and pacer: in the world. 0f course there were the lesser stars too and many that fell by the wayside due to injuries in training or from other causes. Most of the top trainers of America such as aep Palin, Jimmy Cruise, Del (Jam- eron, Henry Thomas, Dr. Parshall, Ralph Baldwin, Foy Funderburk, Bi Shively, Jake Rodman, Ular- ence Hansen, W. L. Fraser, Ray Reeves, Clint Hodgins, Harry Beat- tie, Jack Brown, Paul Celdeburg, Guy Crippen, Fred Egan, Denny Moore, Ralph Ayou, Dick Thomas, Charlie Witt and dozens of others who are not so much in the public eye were in attendance. 1t was s.- mong that galaxy of stars that young Joe O'Brien of Alberton, P. E. I. had to make his debut on the Grand Circuit — the greatest test o1! a driver‘s ability in the world.

Training horses for the big race meet is no slnecure. The drivers are out on the track at 6.30-each horse bears a number so a fan can look up the race form sheet and learn a lot about him, the very cold mornings make it necessary for drivers to wear leather Jackets, The low temperatures gradually warm up and by about ten-o'clock the heavy garments are shed and ahintsleeves are more in vogue. Horses are schooled to the E. M. Smith starting gate at eleven o'- clock. This gate cost upwards of a quarter of a million dollars to perfect and is operated with a four-wheel drive on both front and rear axles. A broken axle o: wheel cannot stall the car. Three powerful Cadillac motors speed the oar faster than the swiftest runner can travel—50 miles per hour within fifty feet from the start. The barrier is operated by another powerful motor, entirely indepen- dent of the car and its motors. The rubber barrier swings away from the horses at lightning speed leav- ing the track absolutely clear ahead,

The schooling of horses is car- ried on under the watchful eye of the Stewards," men appointed by the track management to lay down the rules for procedure of owners, drivers and grooms and to enforce discipline, No horse is allowed to compete in a race until it has passed a successful test with the starting gate. He is then put on the Stewards list with all par- ticulars of his breeding, racing his- wry, ownership, training, etc. From this list he is classified to the

event or events that he appears most suitable to race in. In the case of stakes, of course, entries are made in the regular way and pay- ments collected. But even then the horses must have passed the bar- rier fcste before starting.

If a horse performs badly at the barrier in a race he is marked. off the Stewards list and cannot get on it again until he has passed mother test. That happened to Pafchen Axworthy and he was turned over to Joe O'Brien by own- er-drlver Shelter who qualified hirr. at the barrier and raced hlm- in the $5,000. The procedure on race day is very strict. The greatest precau- tions are taken to see that no hint of collusion among drivers, fixing of races, helping or anything that would work to the detriment of clean competition takes place. The horses before warming up are placed in the receiving barn where the Stewards, with a. list of the rigging of eacle horse checks it. If a hopple is one hole longer than the list and e stewards have not been notifi prior to a cer- tain time in the morning that horse is disqualified. Similarly all parts of the rigging including boots, shoes and sulky are check- ed. Affcr tho warming-up process the horses are called to the pad- dock stalls. There the owner may visit his horse but no one else and owners, drivers or grooms cannot converse with other similar per- sons. From there they go the nad- dock. There the horses are wa.ked around a circular ring or rather rings by the grooms while the drivers stand in the centre. An official in a red coat sounds a long silver trim-met which is the signal to the contestants and to the spec- tators that the race is called. The horses are led out on the track by the grooms, the driver mounts his sulky as it comes out of the pad- dock, and if after he docs so he drops one leg over the sulky wheel, smokes a cigarette or does anything departing from the strict discipline laid down, he is fined.

Knights of Columbus junior baseball squad, backing up the great hurling of Merl McKenzie with a steady fielding display, last night created a three-way tie for leadership in the junior league when they defeated the favored Reece squad s-a in a en innings nip and tuck struggle that saw both teams display some of ‘the finest ball of the season.

With a cold wind blowing across the field that chilled spectators the two squads came up with some sparkling plays as McKenzie, bear- ing down hard in the pinches, won‘ a hurling duel with "Spy" Ready of the losers, the former striking out a total of l2 batters with Ready sending nine back to the bench on strikes.

Knights won the game by time- ly hitting in the first two innings. In the last of the first they comb- ed Ready for three hits, one of them a double that was good for two runs; they got a like number in the second on two errors, two hits, and a passed batter, and wound up their scoring in the fifth with a single counter J. Abbies Team Cops Top Honors At Halifax Pro-Olympic Trials

HALIFAX, June 11 - (OP) — Four Nova Scotia runners were recommended today by the Marl- time committee of the Amateur Athletic Union of Canada to com- pete in the eastern some Olympic track and field trials i_n Montreal.

New Glasgow's Richey Love, 800- metres, Halifaids Eddie wilburn, ism-metres, Glace Bay's Roy Appleton, 5,000-metre5, and Dart- mouth's Dick Canrnichael, 10,000- metres, caught the eyes of the committee and fans in the Mari- time pre-Olymplc trials here today.

They will run at Montreal's Molson Stadium on the week-end of June 19 in the next lap of the trial which may land them a berth on Canada's eighteen-man squad.

O O O ‘ A friend of mine in eastern Kings county had a rather peculiar experience along this same line not so long ago. He is quite an out- doorsman and likes to study birds and animals. One warmish evening quite recently he strolled down a highway east of Souris to keep en appointment with a friend. Reach- ing the spot where they were to meet he set down on the bank of the road to wait and when the friend failed 0o put in an appear- ance he lay back amid some short bushes and dead grass and pro- ceeded to enjoy a smoke.

O O O With arms folded across the hack of his neck he was taking things easy and was beginning to get drowsy. Hearing s. slight rustle in the grass and bushes at his feet he paid no particular attention at first but when the sound persisted he gently raised his head and took a look-see. What he saw fairly took his breath away . . . a trim, dapper young skunk, bearing all the earmarks of a Miss, was very curiously sniffing at his ankles.
