After twelve years of grade school A twelve years of classes every- day from nine to three, twelve years of develop- ing a way of life suited . to this planned program the high school graduate student is suddenly faced with the idea of choosing' a path for the future and all of a sudden grade school seems miles away — as does the security that went with it. In our society it is almost a foregone conclusion that the high school graduate is going .to go on to prepare him/ herself for some station in life and depending on what the individual wants to do there are many options open — the least not of which to be given some thought is University.

Islanders have an advan- tage over many others because there is a univer— sity located within every- one's reach and city kids, or Towny's, as they are sometimes called by ‘ residence students, have

—You don't have to buy those costly brand new textbooks...there are plenty of places to get perfectly'good ones second hand .. check the various bulletin boards and ask around. “

-Professors say that good, reading and writing skills are essential whatever your field...so work at them.

-Find out how to use the library properly...it's a valuable resource.

-Properly budget your spare time.. it's all in your own hands so don't waste it.

-Get advice on planning your courses..you shouldn't have more then 3 consecu- tive classes because you will tend to lose your concentration at this point.

They have the best of both worlds, so to speak; because they don't have to cope with vhigh residence-and food costs and transportation‘ problems and they are free to participate in as muCh or as little of the campus social scene as they wish. The problem however, with many commuting students is that they don't make the effort to get involved.

It is up to the individual to do it- to take the

first step — there are all kinds of directions to take. There is the campus stud— ent union, the campus news— paper, countless numbers of student clubs and organ- izations, not to mention the carnival, the October- fest, the "Pigs" the pubs, the intramural programs, and interscholastic prog- rams etc. etc.

-Get to know your professe ors..they really do care a and are willing to help.

-Pass your assignments in on time...final exams are bad enough without having a couple of papers hang- ing over your head.~

-The library has a comput- er that doesn't forget about your overdue books.. so get them back on time.

And, as fresh- man are quick to discover, the university timetable is not nearly as rigid as the one in highschool.j University students have a lot of "free time? in that they don't go to . classes nearly as much as grade school students but perhapS'the hardest thing to do is to budget that’ time wisely. There is a lot of free time because there is a lot more Work and if it's wasted all you end up with is a lot of work and no time.‘ . Budget carefully and.study- ing and socializing both‘ have a place. The thing to get straight from day one is your pur- _ pose for going to univer— sity: is it strictly for a good time or for a good eduCation too.
