A READJUSTMENT of the pewers and pre- rogatives of Parliament is urged by orators: of the English Liberal Party. They ask for a reduction of the number of Peers, and they desire that a vote of the majority in the Commons shall override a decision of the House of Lords. If these demands are granted England, will be politically reformed and revolutionized.

City Council.

The recular meeting of the City Council was held on Monday evening, the 13th inst. Present :—Mayor Dawson, Council- lors Davy. Lawson, Blake; Koughan, Smith, Byrne and Morris.

A petition was reac ‘ of Upper Prinze Street asking that a gas | lamp which was not lighted for some time be now lighted. The prayer of the petition was complied with.

On motion of Councillor Byrne, the Fire Department was authorized to clean and deepen Quirk’s Pump on Prince Street.

A letter was read from Mr. it. F. Quirk, submitting plans and speeifications, for a building he proposes erecting on Pownal Wharf, and asked the permission of the Council to approve of the plan and specili- cations. The request of Mr. Quirk was granted. we Councillor Morris submitted a letter from Dr. McLeod on the water question, which was read. He also submitted a re- port of P. D, Cox, on Spring Park, as fol- lows :—-

‘I herewith give you a pian and section of the ground from the foot of Queen street to Spring Park.

The distance from Dorchester street to Spring Park is 4,300 feet. The surface of water in the Spring stands pine feet above highest tide. The ground at Grafton street is 224 feet above the level of the spring. A pipe 6 inches diameter is more than sufficient to pass all the water in the Spring. A reservoir at Spring |’ark must not be less than 20 feet high. The Spupe pence abeut 220,900 gallons in 24 heurs. is, as far as I recollect, is what I guaged it under Mr. Murdock :—

Tris well-known institution opens to- morrow, under the direction of the Fathers ef the Seciety of Jesus. It is beautifully situated on an elevated position on Mal- peque Road, a short distance from the city, and commands a view of the surrounding country, the rivers, bay and straits which is really delightful. The building has, under the direction of the Fathers, been thoroughly renovated, and fitted up in the most approved and excellent style. In doing this the comfort and convenience of students lias been consulted, and nothing has been left undone which would in any way detract from the satisfaction of the occupants

The play grounds, too, have pndergone a change which will give ample facilities for the recreation and exercise of pupils. The large ficli between the College building and the Malpeque Road has been laid out as an extensive lawn. The only building on it is a large hand-ball alley. Its surface is hard and level, and the lawn is plenty large to affori any amusement in which two hundred students may engage.

On visiting the College, yesterday, we were informed that the work of renovating and furnish®ng was not quite completed. A little remained to be done. Still, in all departments approaching completion, we were surprised to see such a marked display of neatness. The chapel, study, hall and class-rooms are worthy of special comment. All are tastefully finished and excellently arranged. The dormitory, | which occupies the whole of the upper fiat, is in reality that which a dormitory ought to be—spacious, airy, and comfortable, and afford ng from every window a splendid view of the country for miles around.

We learn that no more students will be received in this institution than can be comfortab'y accommodated. This isa wise rule ; and as sixty is the namber to be ac- commodated, whoever the fortunate sixty are, there can be little doubt that they will

Lapy Aup.ty’s Secrer.—This fine piece of dramatie effect and brilliant dialogue was played last night to a beggarly array of empty benches, Which seems a lack of appreciation of the better kind of drama. As Lady Audley, Miss Violet Campbell rises into dramatic brilliance as an exponent of the difficult passions of this Lady MacBeth type of woman. She showed the artiste by her admirable transitions from ‘‘ grave to gay—from lively to severe: and when it came to the finale— when abandoned and defied by all—she raves incoherentiy and hysterically of her husband and ambition and wealth, cne cannot but fee! impressed with the fact that she is a tra- gedienne in the truest sense. To-night is the last production of East Lynne, which seems the popular play; but the management wisely offers a double-bill, giving for the first time here, The oodles, in which Lindley gives his ideas of the Scott Act. :

The census of the United States is not yet completed, nor is the population of the States and Territories yet ascertained. The statements hitherto published purporting to be froin official sources are, therefore, incorrect and misleading. One of these statements that have been going the rounds of the newspapers, gives the total popula- tion of the Republic at forty-eight millions. The New York Herald of the 6th inst. pub- lishes a table giving a stateinent of the population of each of the States and Ter- ritories, partly from ofiicial figures and partly from estimate, which reaches a total of about 50,000,000, and shows an estimat- ed increase of 11,700,000, or a trifle over 30 per cent. since 1870. near the truth.
