A Sv Joux, ex-policeman named Crane was arrested for drunkness, on Wednesday night. While in his cell he tore part of his clothing into ribbons, whittled some shavings fromm the wood work and then ignited the pile thus formed. When the fire was discovered the prisoner was nearly suffocated. He will be tried for incendiarism.

Joux Bureess, Government Inspector of steamboat boilers, was placed on trial at Ottawa, on the 15th, for feloniously causing the death of Wm. Richardson, one of the pas- sengers on the steamer ‘ Richelieu,” whose boiler exploded some time ago. The trial will probably last several days. The captain and engineer of the steamer will also be tried.
