U. Appleton, General Manager of the Atlantic Region oi the Canadian Nader-rel Railways. who arrived in St. John. The afternoon freight tonnage on the Atlantic region up- to-datc was equal to that of last year's for the same period, Mr. Ap- pleton stated. 'l‘his may be taken as e fair indication of business trend in the Marltimes. The Canadian Na- tional operates more than seventy- seven per cent of the total railway mileage to Canada's Atlantic provin- ces.

sleeping sickness today claimed the life of Percy Fisher, Vice-President: of the English Amateur Athletic As-‘ sociatien here. Mr. Fisher, who leftu England in hopes of watching the; fortunes of the Empire games at Hamilton, Ont, was stricken with the malady on board steamer and was confined to hospital since his arrival here. Death occurred in the Montreal General Hospital.

It is believed Mr. Fisher contract- ed the malady shortly before- sailing for Canada. Some days ago he ral- lied somewhat and slight hope was held that he would recover. The rally was short lived. however, and on Monday there was s grave doubt as to whether he would lest through the night. For most of the time he was in Hospital here, he was uncon-l scious. .
