WHEREAS French and Acadian settlers came here in 1720, t0 lsle-Saint-Jean, and stablished the lirst permanent European seulement on the lsland, living side-by-side withthe Mi'krnaq;

AND WHEREAS 250 years ago, in 1758, the British order ol Déportation of lsland Acadiens sentenced entire communities to exile and deprived them ol their peaceful way ol lite;

AND WHEREAS two'thirds 0l the sattlers were lorcibly expulsed, 1,700 ot whom perished, while others lied, sparing

only a couple ot hundred individuels by mid-l759;

AND WHEREAS the Deportation inllicted sullaring and liarrlships tliat shapad the indomitablo spirit ni tlm Acadian peuple, spirit that is olive and well todny;

AND WHEREAS the Acatlinn and Francophone community is an intogml part 0l tho social labric ol nur province nnd

schools and community centres, French public libraries, the Acadian Museum, among others, ensure thatthe Acadian culture and French language are not only preserved, but continue to flourish;

AND WHEREAS all lslanders would benefit from gaining better understanding ot the Deportation and ofthe significance of the province's rich Acadian héritage;

AND WHEREAS governments have paved the way over the last 30 years for the present members of the Legislative Assembly to support linguistic duality in Prince Edward lsland now, and forfuture generations;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED thatthe Législative Assembly encourage all lslanders t0 participate in the various activities which will take place throughout the year t0 commemorate the Déportation and celebrate the vitality of the Acadian and Francophone communitv, notably the unveiling ol a monument this sommer at Port—la—Joye-Fort-Amherst National Historie Site, the location of the original French settlement;

THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Government of Prince Edvvard lsland actively pursue its commitnient to tlie development and nnhancenient 0l tlin Acadian and Francophone cornniunity,

First of all, l would like t0 say hello

t0 everyone here with us today. We

have Georges Arsenault, Chair ot the Soeur Antoinette DesRoches Historical Committee. We have Francis Blanchard whom l met when lwas a young boy on Brighton Road and who is also a member of the Soeur Antoinette DesRoches Historical Committee and Chair of the Club Richelieu Port-La-Joye. We have Marcellin Garneau, VicePresident of the Société- Saint—Thomas—d'Aquin; one of myfriends, Edgar Arsenault who is acting Director

of the Carrefour de l'lsle-Saint-Jean and we also have people working with us and our Minister in our Department, Donald DesRoches, Dominique Chouinard and Ricky Hitchcock who are with us here today.

Madam Speaker, it is my privilege t0 move this motion recognizing the 250‘" anniversaw of the deponation of lsland Acadians.

Ûur Legislntive Assembly lirst brought nttnntion to this traqic event three years (igtl liy rocognizing the lirst wave ol deportntion which began in I755 with the expulsion nl Acadiens iront Nova Scotia.

Tndny, we tui‘n oui attention to lsland Acadiens who were targeted for depnrtntion beginning in 1758 when the French military surrendered Louisbourg to British troops.
