Saturday night makes people more hu- man, and seis their hearts to beating soft. ly, as they used to before the world turned them into war drums and jarred them to pieces with tattooes. The Jedger closes with a crash, the iron-doored vaults come to with a bang, up go the shutters with a will, click goes the key in the lock. {tis Saturday night, and business breathes free again. Homeward, ho! The door that has been ajar all the week gently closes behind bim; the world is all shut out. Shut out? Shutin rather. Here are his treasures after all, and not in the vault and oot in the book——save the re- cord of the old family Bible—and not ino the bank. Maybe you are a_ bachelor, frosty and forty. Then, poor fellow, Saturday night is nothing to you, just as you are nothing to anybody. Geta wife, blue-eyed or black-eyed, but above all true-eyed. Geta little home, no matter how little; a sofa, just two or two and a half, and then get two or two and a half in it of a Saturday night, and then read this paragraph by the light of your wife’s eyes, and thank God and take courage. +—->-> i

Turkish beggars—sufferers of the pre- sent war in tbe East—have put in an ap- pearance. One of these mendicants pre- sented himself at the door of an uptown residence a few mornings since, with his hat extended in a supplicatory manner, and muttering “ Allah Bismallah geloshes rustchvk,” or something that way. When a cross dog came up in his rear and seized a mouthful of his baggy breeches, he ex- claimed, “ Git out o’ that ye dirty brute, or I'll knock off the head o’ ye!” He knew the dog wouldn’t understand the Turkish language.
