Men's Hockey Panthers Take It To Moncton

Last Wednesday the UPEI Hockey Panthers travelled to Moncton to try their luck against the Blue Eagles. The Panthers were able to come out on top with a 5-3 victory. Scoring for UPEI was Joel Ward with 2 and Adam Rivet, Nick Policelli, and Adam Chapman each picking up one. Luc Chaisson also had a strong offensive showing as he chipped in on three of the panthers five goals.

The Panthers record now moves to 5-7 as they are nip- ping on the heals of the rest of the division. They boys travel back to Moncton this Saturday and will look to take another win from the Blue Eagles in preparation for their matchup on Sunday as they host STU at 7:00 at the Charlottetown Civic Centre.

Women's Hockey Team Can't Quite Put It Together

This past Saturday, the UPEI Women's Hockey team travelled to Halifax to take on the defending AUS Champion Saint Mary's Huskies. With five of the top ten scorers in the division, the Huskies offence took full advantage in exploiting the struggling panthers, as the final score rounded out at 10- 1. It is hard to expect to win against a powerhouse like SMU but the girls definitely came out with their minds set on playing a strong all

around game. This young panther team has been juggling their lines all season, looking and waiting for their offence to catch fire. At times they have looked great and other times they have struggled and are looking to find consistency down the final half of the season.

The panthers will look towards the likes of Maeghan Rodgers and Katie Coneen to lead the charge for the panthers if they wish to turn the season around and finish off strong. Also, the panthers defence will need the physical play of defensemen Charlotte Smith and Tracy Gardiner to continue, each of whom have racked up 8 minutes in penalties in their first five games.

Men's Basketball Prove Why They Are AUS Champions

This past Friday, the UPEI men's basketball team squared off against the number two ranked

team in the country, St. Francis Xavier. The rematch of last year's semi-final showdown was to be one of UPEI's biggest challenges of the year. The panthers were up to the task as they defeated the X-men in a convincing 73-63 victory.

Despite a terrible first half shooting percentage of only 24%,

the boys were able to close out the

first half trailing by only three points, 29-26. Scoring 16 of the teams 26 points in the first half was Jeff Walker who has played consis- tently well for the panthers this sea- son. The Panthers came on strong in the second half as they pulled away from St. FX with a 58% field goal percentage which compliment- ed numerous strong defensive

Duncan and Doug McKinney. This win will act as a huge boost for the guys this season and has bumped their record to 2-1.

Top scorers for the panthers on the night were Jeff Walker with a game high 26, Mike Kierstead and Tyler Wood with 13 each, and Kenny Duncan with 11.

The team leaders after three games this season are Jeff Walker with 23.7 PPG, Doug McKinney with 7 RPG, and Tyler Wood with 3.3 APG.

UPEI Women's Basketball Takes Win On Road vs. St.FX

The Lady Panthers came out last week with fire in their eyes as they dominated the St. Francis Xavier women last Friday. UPEI led from start to finish and did not allow their counterparts to accumu- late any sort of rhythm. At the half the score was 29-23 and that was as close as St. FX could get as our girls poured it on in the second half. The final score of 73-61 is not a fair indication of how the Panthers were able to determine the flow of the game. The final could have been a lot worse than it was but Tracy Ellsworth saw an opportunity to give some of her bench players a taste of the early season action. The reserves played very well for UPE! and were able to hold of the little attempt that the X-women did show.

Scoring for the panthers was rookie sensation Melissa Campbell with 24, Natasha Eadie with 16, Katie Andrews, Lindsey Coade and Katherine Walters each added 9 points.
