The United States and the Mexico Governmeats have come to apn agree- ment concerning Reciprocity in Indian hunting. Mexican seldiers have bunted the bronzed brigand into U. S. territory ; and the soldiers otf the U.S. have. fre- quently passed over into Mexico. There was no diplomatic understanding on this subject, and as a consequence, much irritation has been felt by the respective governments.. This is all settled now, and Sitting Bull, Dancing Frog. Great Bear, Tom A.Hawk,and: ther well-known Indians will feel convinced of the neces- sity of submitting to the ameneties of civilized life.

Uneducated Voters.

Tue statement is made in some of the Awerican papers that thirty two per cent. of the voters of that country are unable to read the ballots they cast. Two millions of the “ free and intelli- gent” voters of that country cannot write their own names. The least com- forting part of the thing is the fact that ove million five huodred thousand of these illiterate voters live in the old slave States. Such a mass of illiterate voting power cannot be looked upon with much pride. (Government by the people must be government by an intelligent peo- ple, else nething but bribery, disaster, aud national deterioration will ensue.

Tue re-action in favor of our Provin- cial Governmeat, as shown by the tri- umphant return of the Honorable Mr. Prowse in the Murray Harbor District, and in other indications, are attracting attention pot only in this Province but also throughout the Dominion generally. The Montreal Gazette, one of the ables: and most trustworthy papers published in Canada, gives the following review of the situation ia King’s County, Prince Edward Island:—

Maritime Cricket.

Tae ehampion cricket team of Nova Scotia, known as the ‘‘ Wanderers” com- menced a week of a series of engagements with teams in Nova Scotia and New Bruns- wick. Victory was perched upon their banners in every encounter until they reached Moncton, where they experienced adraw. Since then they have ‘‘gone further and fared worse.” In St, John they met a pretty severe defeat. After playing two days in regular Waterloo style, the score stood at the close, 104 for St. John, and 79 for Halifax. Now, the return of the ‘*Wanderers”’ is looked for.

Many Canadian canveists have appeared this year, but their intentions are entirely laudable, and they are heartily welcomed. It would be hard to find any other physica! diversion whose devotees are so largely drawn from professional life as are the canoeists at Lake George. Judges, lawyers, physicians, clergymen and jou- nalists abound at the canoe camps; yet they never talk shop. Canoeing is by all odes the best diversion for the professional man, for it enables him to get entirely awar from bores while taking his exercise- His boat seldom accommodates more than one person, s» he can think, if he wants to, while he _ sails, or he can enjoy entire seclusion from the wor!d that talks. For such a blessed privileg: within constant reach many aman would gladly give half of his possessions; yet a good canoe is cheaper than a poor horse, and costs nothing to maintain, while it is 80 easy to manage that some small boys are expert and safe canoeists. cilia

Fears are entertained of an outbreak of Mu:sulmans in Syria, caused by the troubles in Egypt aud the reports that are being extensively circulated there of the movements of Arabi in favour of Islam. The lower classes of the people are very violent in their demeanour, and look with great digtrust on the parc that the Porte Is taking in. the Egyptian troubics. Ord rs have been sent by the Governor of Dem- ascus, and by the Governors of the princi- pal places to take special precautionary measures against the rising storm.

County Court opens at Centreville to- morrow, the fifteenth, aud in Summerside on Friday. Several interesting cases, as we learn trom the clerk, will be tried here. Speaking of law matters it is ramored that we are shortly to have two more branch law oflices established in this town, and which we have no doubt will prove a real convenience to Prince County.

The seleetion of a site for the new Post Office is causing some little commotion here. Several pieces of ground are offered on Water Street, aud a few others more in the centre of the town.

Some of the head officials of the Mer- chants Bank of Halifax have been here during the week for the purpose of making arrangements to erect a new building for that institution. ‘he location is, we believe, on Water Street, next to the premises ot R. T. Holman, Merchant.

David Rogers, Rsq., has now in frame, a large warehouse abutting on the track of the railway, which, in all probability, wiul be completed in time for the fall trade. The building is very commodious, being 103 x 33 ft. Pierce Doyle, the well-known contractor of this town, is the builder.

The Journal of last week has been issued. Editorially it undertakes to assert that it is now the largest weekly paper in the Pro- vince. The editor seems to forget that the Weexkiy Examiner takes the precedence in point of size, as well as in other features.

Mr. P. T. Fanning, of the well known “Golden Buot,” being anxious to extend the boundaries of a pasture field which he owns in the town, has resorted to the bold expedient of removing his northern boun hdary fence to the middle of a public street.

A man was very nearly run down at the station crossing on Saturday morning, the engine just ‘shaving’ his waggon. The man was entirely to blame. as the engineer blew his whistle twice.
