EXAMINATION AND ENTERTAINMENT

Alexandra School,

The Examination and Entertainment of the Alexandra School took place day afternoon Dec 22ni%. The school honse Was most carefully decorated for the occasion by the scholars. Over the teach- er’s desk was a beautiful arch, reachirg to | the ceiling, composed of ferns, mosses, and |

evergreens, decorated with artifical flowers. | | In the centre of the arch were words of | welcome,

The school was literally packed contain- ing 36 children, 29 parents and vi-i'or-, and | our popular teacher, Mr, Chester MeLure, Atl o'clock precise the Examination began. The pupils were examined ip the foliowing brarches of instruction; Reading, Othography, Writing, History, Geography, Arithmetic, and Current events. Mr. Layton Mc Cabe, Mr. James Jndson, and Mr. B Wood assisted the t eacher during the examination. The echolars showed, by their sccura‘e and well put together answers, their careful training. The geography was made very interesting to the parents and visitors, The teacher conducied the class. One of the pupils drew an outline map of P. E, Is- land on the blackboard. Then another marked in the railroad, etc., until the les- son was finished in avery minute manner. Current events needs more than a cursory mention. The boys and girls showed that they hada good idea of every day topics. Throughout the whole exam nation, both teacher and scholars showed they were

loyal Canadians. Chen cam? the entertainment, consisting of comic readings.

The dialogues by eight little girls, “Each has a Work” and“ A School girl’s Trouble.” are worthy of special mention. “Trades and Professions” illustrated by 10 little beys, called forth the applaudits of (he parents and visitors. Next came a very welcome part for the scholars, when Mrs. James Robertson and Mrs. James H. Judson treated the scholars to pastry and apples.

Many remarks were made to the children and teacher by the parents and visitors, ' Then a yote of thanks was tendered Mr. McLure, by Mr. Jardine, on bebalf of the parents and visitors for the very efficient management of the school. Mr. McLure responded in a few well chosen remarks, Then theNational Anthem was eung thronghout, Thus ended a well spent day in school.

It is pleasing to note that Mr.T. A. Mc- Leap, son of the proprietor of E-dale Foundry and Machinery Works in this city was chosen to represent McGill University atthe annual dinner of the University of Toronto, and that the Toronto papers report that he did so creditably. Of course: he did.

Tue Marrs —The Stanley left Pictou at430 yesterday afternoon and reached Georgetown about 7.30. The special from Georgetown reached Charlottetown at 11.15 and the outgoing special left for George- town shortly afterwards. The Stanley left Georgetown for Pictou at the usual tims this morning, and left thet port on return to Georgetown this atternoon.

Postrace Rates.—Notice bas been re- ceived by Inspector Brecken here that the proposed reducticn in the nostage on letters addressed to the United Kingdom and all parts of tbe British Empire, has, owing to certain unforseen difficulties, been post~ poned. Letters, therefore, for the United Kingdom and British Colonies, will con- tinue until further notice to be subject to the present rate of five cents per half ounce.

Tre Srantey.—Yesterday morning Mr. Lord sent a letter to Capt. Finlayson explain- ing the situation regarding the Stanley, and suggesting that he do hie best to bring her to Charlottetown. A reply to thia letter was received today by Mr. Lord. Captain Finlayson explains that on the trip from Charlottetowa to Pictou the steamer passed through ten miles of heavy ice out- side Point Prim. The ice was heavy enough to stop the steamer, and he had to follow leads the same as in the winter time, Captain Finlayson further says it is not possible for him to make return trips be: tween Pictou and Charlottetown. How- ever if the devartment orders him to come to Charlottetown he will do the best he can under the circumstances, but will not become responsible for any accident or detention.
