The passenger raade no move and did pot change countenance, and after mak- ing the course all right the driver rather indignantly demanded:

‘Didn’t you see that the off wheel run within a foot of the edge of the precipice?”’

“It ran within six inches, sir,’’ was the reply.

Beyond the curve was a down grade of a wile, and with a yell and a flour- ish of his whip the driver urged his horses to a dead run. The five of us in- side had to hang on for dear life, and

every half minute the stage seemed bound to go over.

‘*Did you know that if we'd struck a rock we'd all been dead men in no hime?’

**Of course.’’

‘*And you wasn’t prayin?’’

** Not at all.”’

When the sun bas set in the valley and the snowy sumuits of the moup- tains gleam ‘vith golden light, the herds- man who dwells upon the highest hab itable spot takes his horn and pro- nounces clearly and Icudly through it, as through a speaking trumpet, ‘* Praise the Lord God.’’ Assoon as the sound is heard by the neighboring herdsmen they issue from their huts, take their Alpine borns and repeat the came words.

This freqrently lasts a quarter of an bour, and the call resounds from a!l the mountains and rocky cliffs around. When silence again reigus, the herds- men kneel and pray with uncovered heads. Meantime it has become quite dark. ‘‘Good night!’’ at last calls the highest herdsman through his horn. Half a dozen times she tried to engage the attention of the saleswoman, who had enough customers waiting to have occupied five saleswomen. Every time the saleswoman responded, “In a minute I’ll wait on you,’’ and went placid- ly on attending to the wants of somebody else. The well dressed young woman trembled with impatience.

‘“‘These Washington clerks don’t under- stand their business like New York clerks,’’? she said to her companion. ‘‘A New York clerk can wait on eight people at once.”’

‘*It’s outrageous having to wait this way,’’ said the companion, who wore an owl on her hat.

‘It’s shameful,’’ said the first young woman.

‘It’s perfectly horrid,’ said the second.
