The firm of Fennell and Chandler was form- ed in 1892. and the firm name was continued by Mr. Chandler after he took over the business on hu own account. Under his manage- ment it became one of the best known hardware establishments in the Province.

Mr. Chandler was a son of Mr. Edward Chandler. Southport, and Mrs. Chandler. the former Miss Jane Crawford. a direct" descent- snt of the famous Scottish hero William Wallace.

As an ardent horseman he was widely known for his importa- tion from California of the fam- ous trotier, LlLsty.Erlsco. He was a firm believer in trotters and showed little patience with the pacers. All the horses which he subsequently owned and helped train were trotters. Among the better known locally was the la- land-hred Lustlcln. Mr. Chandler also owned the famous Maritime life. Captain Jackson.

Financial Crisis Is Major Problem Facing Churchill

The return to power of Winston Churchill's Conservative Party provided the decisive event of Britain's political year in 1531- Ii marked the end of the first epoch of Socialist majority rule and set new minds to work on another crisis in the country's financial fortunes.

In the Oct. 26 general election. the Conservatives gained a ma- jority over all other parties of nearly 20 seats in the l-lousepof Commons compared with a sin- gle-figure majority for Labor in the pre-election parliament.

The Conservative margin was smaller than many observers had expected but the first weeks of the new parliament suggested it wou-ld prove enough for effective government. thus ending the mel- anoholy deadlock between the two big parties which had existed since the stalemate election Feb. 23. 1960.

Churchill. Prime Minister for the first time by the votes of the pectpic-he, was summoned by parliament to be wartime pre- mier-moved swiftly to name a new cabinet in which Anthony sden as foreign secretary was No. 2 man. A novel feature of the 16-member cabinet was the ap- pointment to important co-ordln- sting posts of non-party men such as Lord lsmay. Lord Cherwell and Lord Leathers.

Dubbed "Overlords"

Lord Woolton. Lord Reading and Lord De La Warr were oth- er prominent peers in the gov- 'ernment. and promptly won the popular title of "Overlords". La- bor. in opposition for the first time since its 1945 victory at the polls. criticized the new Conserv- ative cabinet as representing "government of the people. for big business. by the lords".

'1l.vo Conservatives, who broad- ly dominated British politics in the years between the two world wars, came back to power at a time of financial crisis. At the opening of the 40th parliament. Nov. 6, Churchill promised a "full and frank" statement on economic difficulties he describ- ed ss worse than those encounter- ed in the devaluation crisis of 1949 and in many ways worse than those of the convertibility crisis of 1947. At the morning service of the Church of the Nazarene. Rev. David Morrison based his remarks on "The Angels Message” wit-h continuation of the subject at the evening worship. Appropriate Christmas hymns were sung at both services. Miss Edna Lewis was the organist.

Rev. J. Donald MacKny of the Presbyterian Church gave a pro- vocative sermon based on the text "In the beginning God" the junior Glrlls Choir, under the direction of Mr. Thomas Hall with Mrs. Cleve Whelsn organist. sang four Christmas carols previous to the regular morning service. The ranthcms "The First Christmas Mom" and "Christians Awake" were rendered by the choir with Mr, Hall soloist. In the evening a candlelight service was held open- ing with carols sung by the Jun- ior Girls Choir. The anthems were "A Star was 1-lls cradle" and "There's A Song In The Air".

Rev. W. .3. Weale of the Church of Christ read the scripture story which was interspersed with the following vocal selections: "We Three Kings Of The Orient Are" ”Slient.Nir:l1t" "Away In A Mang- er" and the "First Noel." The vocal solo "Down From His Glory" was rendered by the minister with Miss Evelyn MacLure as organist. Profitable Year For Poultry Products

The year .1961 proved a profit- able one for those engaged in the production of poultry products. reports Mr. F. M. Nash. Prices were good and a ready market was at hand for the product. In a way. it was is record year. Baby chick sales increased 20 per cent. egg production 6 per cent and poultry meat 25 per cent over 1950.

It is true feed prices advanced but not the same extent as poul- try products. Feed prices were up 4 per cent over 1950 but egg prices advanced 28 per cent and poultry meat 8 to 12 per cent.

The average price paid for eggs. basis Grade A Large. was 51c per dozen. an advance of Ilc over 1950. The average price paid for poultry meats was high- er. being Me for live chicken and tie for fowl. an advance of two and three cents respectively over last year.

WITH ALLIED FORCES IN GERMANY. Dec. 23 - (AP)-If Russia suddenly attacks. Allied commanders believe they are strong enough now to hold on the Rhine.

A year ago. the prospect was a headlong retreat to the Pyrenees and the Brittany peninsula.

The idea that most of Europe would have to be lost to Russia before it could be saved is now

out of date.

A massive buildup of Allied ground forces in Germany has been carried through in 1951. Troop strength has more than doubled.

The United States had only 40.000 combat effectives here at

the Hart of the year. Now there are 200,000. Britain has well over 100.000.

Weakness In Air

In the months immediately ahead. the big Western weakness in Germany is not on the ground but in the air. The Rus- sians have 'more and better planes here.

In ground combat capability. the Allies have reached parity with the Soviet army group in

East Germany for the first time since 1945. This was possibly be- fresh divisions were
