Student Council Update

The first student council meeting of 2005 for the UPEISU was held on

VP Finance- Britt continues to work

~ with Mildred Dover in regards to post secondary funding. - He will begin working on bank drafts for the Student Union and will be working on next year’s budget with Heather Love.

Exec VP - Mark mentioned the

staged accident that took place before the break. The City Police and Neil’s ambulance Services were both involved. - There was a reception held in the Student Centre on the gand of December with Peter Mansbridge and Rex Murphy.

- Dismissal letters will no longer be

given out at the Christmas break.

Senate

created to monitor the efficiency of Senatorial operations, it’s goal will be to improve the overall productivity of the Senate itself. - UPEI ranked 3°4 overall in research productivity.

conducting research on campus in regards to various issues that the GSA is concerned with, and a report outlining the results of such research should be made available in March.

- The GSA is encouraging students to participate in a letter writing campaign for the current situation taking place at York University and in support of a dedicated transfer payment for education and research.

Nursing = - Nursing society were to hold a pub crawl on the 12™™. Business - A booth was set up at the Chamber Mixer by the Business Society and luncheon tickets were being sold. - The expansion of the wireless network on campus was discussed.

International Students - Orientation was held for international

students on January gth.

. - It was noted that many international students have been affected by the tsunami disaster.

Writing Centre Starts Another Fun-Filled Year

Worry not, my friends. The Writing Centre is back in action for your linguistic needs.

While it is not the duty of the Writing Centre staff to edit or re write your paper, their humble purpose is to make better writers out of the students who visit the centre, said Prof. Linda Meggs, the writing centre coordinator.

The English professor stated

sometimes students just expect to drop .

off their papers, get lunch and come back with a revised assignment. This, says Prof. Meggs, is not the case.

She explained that sessions with peer tutors are two- fold. There must be give and take on both sides but a tutor should do more pening | than talking, she said.

“That’s something I have problems with,” she admitted, adding the only way writing centre patrons learn anything about the writing process is to take part in it.

Fledgling writing tutors were told during a training session on Friday to first ask what the patron needs help with and then to “trick them” into participating in the session. Tutors ask partons to read the problematic assignment out loud or have the patron listen for errors while the tutor reads aloud.

Generally, tutors are there to spot problems with papers, whether the problem is an unclear thesis or comma splices. She added it is not the duty of the peer tutor to edit the entire paper,

but to pick out inconsistencies and ask how the patron can apply that information to other parts of the paper. “You can pick out a paragraph to edit then say, ‘Now try this in the rest of your paper”, she explained, adding for the most part, tutors are not expected to put ink to paper.

A handout distributed by Prof. Meggs paraphrased Stephen Noth’s The Idea of a Writing Centre was to “improve student writers, not just student’s writings.”

The Writing Centre is open Monday to Thursday by appointment 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Fridays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Drop-in sessions take place at “The Write Place” in the Robertson Library Pit Mondays to Thursdays and Sundays from 3 to 7 p.m.
