It tells how sales financing started'in Canada in 1919 largely to provide a new financing serv- ice to meet a growing demand for automobiles, a demand that was dipping into a limited cash market. I I FOLLOW PAY SYSTEM “Basically, we buy in instal- ment because, we are paid in in- stalments,” says the booklet. “.We received our annual salar- ‘ies piecemeal in weekly or monthly payments and so we buy the more expensive, durable it- ems .we require in the same way. This is both logical and economic- ally sound.”

One study, believed to be rep- resentative, show-ed that of every 100 persons using instalment cre— dit, about 530 were skilled or semi- skilled workers; 14 were clerical personnel; 13 proprietors or man- agers; six professional men, six either farmers, fishermen or lum— bermen,‘ five salesmen and four members of the armed serivces. The booklet says instalment credit costs are, in reality, the “costs involved in extending and maintaining the service, which enables the purchaser to take im- ‘mediate possession of an article and enjoy its use While paying for it.” ‘
