Kind Words For Misa Barr, Charlottetown,

The Carlisle, Pa., Gazette, of Oct. says:

“The sphere of woman is everywhere” was said not long since by Mrs. Annabel Morris Holvey, of Pittston, the brilliant and accomplished press superintendent of the Pennsylvania State W.C. T.U. Mrs. Holvey, who, by the way, is one of the brightest and most lovable of women, is deeply interested in the welfare of her sex and knows whereof she speaks. Had she been present at the contest between Dick- inson and the Indian school, last Saturday when the usefulness of woman was so modestly, yet judiciously proven, Mrs. Holvey would have nodded her golden crowned head aud said: “I told you so.”

“It was during the last half of the game when the muscular Indians, who had beaten back their adversaries time and again, felt the first shock of resistance and determined opposition. Four of Dickinson’s players had gone down on the turf with Sioux, Arroopahoe, Cheyenne, Kiowas, Brule, Ute and Apache Indian piled ina great red heap upon them. Bruised limbs, sore necks and decorated eyes told the tale of collision. But Dickinson picked up heart and went at them with all their strength and determina- tion. There was a crash, a shock and si- lence followed. The big fellows untangled themselves andout ot the middle of the mass was dragged the young Iadian giant Artie Miller. Hisankle was injured, one of the ligaments bei ng torn from its fast- ening. The pain was intense. The player wascarried to the goal line where the school’s physician took him in charge. Pushing her way to where the sufferer lay on the graces, came Miss Barr, the skilled nurse belonging to the Indian school hospital. Shekmew her duty aud in jess than no time, the shoe and eiocking were removed aud bandages appli- ed. Miss Barr held the foot and assisted the doctor ia his work. Placing the Indian ia the ambulance, the tender-hearted nurse took sea. beside him and accompanied him back to the school. Miss Barr is a woman- ly woman, of fice physique, noble face and queenly ways, her presence coramanding the greatest obeisance. It was a sight worth seeing to witness the profound respect shown this ministering angel by the Indian pupil*, smal] and large. They could not have done otherwise. Ina her those Indian boys have a loyal frieud and they know it. Mise Barr’s sphere is one which any woman might envy.”

The Miss Barr referred toin the fore- oing extract is a former resident of harlottetown, and a sister of Mrs. Jobn

Coombs. She is evidently as popular abroad as she was at home.

Mcrray River, Oct. 18.- Asour readers | are awarea search party, mostly fron Boston, has been engaged in endeavouring to find traces ot M J. Scanlan, of Bostor,

Mass, who suddenly disappeared in the vicinity of Murray River on the ord cf the « month. The search was succcessful yesterday

(Sunday), when the party found the par- tially decomposed dead body of Mr. Seanlen in the woods on the farm of Mr. John Evans at Murray River. The discovery was made by a young man named Daniel J, Saunders. Parts of the deceased’s face was much decompozed, but identifi sation was rendered complete by papers fouad in the pockets of his clothes and other articles found on hie body. There were $35 in

aring on his finger. The Newfoundlaad dog which was brought from Boston to assist in the search was of no aid aud gave

no sign gthat he recognised the body of his dead master. The coroner, iimmediately after the body

hearing all the available ev.dence,rendered a verdict that the deceared came 10 his death through exposure and fatigue. Lhere was no suspicion whatever of foul play. The body was after the inquest taken in charge by an undertaker aod this morn- ing was taken by deceased’s friends and is pow on its way to Boston via. Charlotte- town. Itis thought that the deceased was laboring under some temporary mental derangement, and while in that condition got bewildered and lay down, us the place where his body was found is only some 30@ yards or so from a dwelling houee,

DISCOLORING OF CANNED LOBSTERS

Bacteria May be Destreyed by the Appli- cation of Heat to tke Filied Can.

Orrawa, Oct. 15.—Last year Dr. A. MacPhail, professor of pathology in Bishbop’s college, Montrea!, was commis- sioned by the miovister of marine and fish- eries to investigate the cause of discolora— tion of canned lobsters. His report has just heen ise ued. Dr. MacPhail found the discoloration to be due to bacteria, and after elaborate experiments proved that the bacteria could only be destroyed by the application of heat to the filled can, the use of germicidal fluids being out of the question. The process is simple enough, and when adopted will save hundreds of thousands of doliars yearly to Canadian canners. Following is aa abstract of the method recommended for the canning of lobsters on the basis of Dr. MacPhail’s inquiry : 1, boil the live lobsters twelve to fifteen minutes ia sea water, Which is renewed daily; 2,cool on lime washed labele and break off as soon as possible; 3, pull the tails, remove the meat from the arms and claws, place seperately in pans which have been cleansed in boiling fresh water; 4 front split the sail and remove every trace of cu’, wash off green gland in cold fresh water; 5, wash a second time in fresh water which has been boiled and cooled (if the fresh water is taken from a fresb spring or deep pure well, chis boiling is unneces ary); 6, place in earthenware dishes and cover with

Mission at Vernon River. — The mission at St. Joachim’s Church, Vernon River, couducted by the Paulist Fathers, opened yesterday, and although the weather was unfavorable the attendance was large both morning and evening. The mission will continue all this week and on Suvday. All are cordially invited to attend.

Potice Covrt.—This forenoon Alex- ander Turner, charged with drunkenness, was fined $2 or 10 days.

George Chilton was charged with a breach of the Militia Act for refusing to attend at parade onthe occasion of the Vice Regai visit. Chilton is a bandsman in the 82nd Battalion. The case was ad- jourued for judgment until this day week.

Tue Nova Scotia Way.—On Wednesday ntght some parties entered the premises of Howard Webb, Bridgewater, N. S., and stole a pair of cart wheels worth $10, a hoe and axe. On the same night some person went to the farm of the late Josiah Sarty, same place, and stole 150 heads of cabbage, anda lot of turnips, took a bell from offan ox in the field and a pair of ox chains from the barn.

Severe Srorm.—A severe wind and rain storm, accompanied by a slight fall of snow, set in on Saturday evening and continued throughout yesterday and last night. The wind was chiefly from the northwest. The velocity of the wind was between 35 and 40 miles an hour. An inch and a quarter of rain fell: There was not very much damage done in the

city. ‘Shingles were blowa from houses, aod tree boxes, flagpoles and f neces
