Absurd Attempt to Prove That Marshal Ney Escaped to Aaterica.
““A Family Record of Ney’s Execu- tion,”’ written by Mme. Campan, is con- tributed to the July Century by a rela- tive of this lady, George Clinton Genet of Greenbush, N.Y. Mr. Genet, in a pre- paratory note, says: An absurd attempt has been made recently te prove in a published volume that Ney was not shot in 1815, but escaped to America, and became & schoolmaster in North Carolina, where he lately died. An alleged fac simile of his writing is given in the book, as well as one of the writings of the old French cavairyman who, it is alleged, when drumk on a_ certain 0c- casion, declared himself to be the Duke of Elchingen. The writing, which it is claimed is the genuine writing of the marshal, seems doubtful when compared with that known to be his, and the as- sumed similarity between that and the writing of the old French soldier of North Carolina is inconceivable. It is ab- surd to suppose that Ney should have proclaimed himself to be the Duke of Elchingen, since at the time of cution he was Prince of Moskowa, and no longer Duke of Elchingen.
It is impossible that, as is the book referred to, Ney should consented to the subterfuge of being shot at by muskets charged with powder alone, and after falling and pretending to be dead, should have suffered himself to be carried into exile in a strange land. At the battle of Waterloo Ney vainly sought death wherever the battle was fiercest, With an army of sixty theusand men still left, he capitulated under the wells of Paris, wpon condition of general amnesty of offenses both civil and military. These terms were basely violated, and to satisfy the clamor of the returned aristocrats of the old regime, Ney was executed. Wellington could have prevented this crime after the condemna- tion by the chamber of peers, but did nos, for reasons best known to himself. Ney was offered an opportunity to escape, but refused. He asked the soldiers to fire at his heart, and they did.
Moreover, at the time when if %& claimed that Ney was concealing himself in North Carolina, Joseph Bonaparte was living at Bordentown, and his house and his fortune would haye_been at Ney’s dis- posal. Moreover, after the fall of the Bourbons there would have been no reason why Ney should not have returned to France. In 1832 Eugene Ney, his third son, visited the United States, and went to the house of his kinsman Genet, who resided on the Hudson, near Al- bauy, but never heerd of this alleged Duke of Elchingen, low these absurdities further. buried in Pere ja Chaise two of his sons and his brother-in law, Gamot. fhe battle of Waterloo was fought on June 18, 1815, and the hundreds of thou- , sands of men who struggled that day for supremacy have all passed away except two in America, four in the British Isles apd six in France, and mostof these men are centenarians.
James hk. Green, ninety-eight years old, resident of Ellsworth, Mahoning eounty, Ohio, while not a participant in the great battle, had the privilege of witnessing the thrilling events of that
week in Belgium, which marked the downfall of the Napoleon dynasty, and who viewed that battle from a better
vantage ground, perhaps, than any of the participants.
He gave a vivid description recently of the battle of Waterloo to New York Heraid reporter.
Mr. Green is remarkable character nnd striking personality, which impresses all who come in contact with him. He was born in Bolton, eashire, England, July 25, 1798, and entered the English navy when sixteen years cllas a midshipman. The next year his ship was employed in transport- ing English soldiers for Wellington's army across the channel fron Southamp ton to Antwerp, and it was at this time that he accidentally witnessed Waterloo. He describes the battle as follows:—
“I was asallor lad of King IJI., and was employed as a midshipman on a war ship in June, 1815. After the British fleet had transpurted Wellington's army across the channel of the seaport of Antwerp, my vessel was anchored in the harbor at that place. The soldiers had told me that great fighting Was ex pected, as they were about to mect iNapoleon, who was making a desperato effort to regain the power which he had once held over Europe. Securing per- mission, five boys, myself included, left the ship and svarted across Belgium in the direction we were told the British ariny was camping. We came first to Ligny, where the preliminary battle of that terrible week in Belgium teok place. We were two miles distant from the teft flank of Napoleon’s army after Ligny, and we concluded to follow and watch the encounter.
“At Quatre Bras Napoleon attacked the outposts of the Duke of Wellington, but he was repulsed, falling to Waterloo that night, where he deter- mined to make his final stand. The French army bivouacked in large fields of rye, which was almost ripe, on the pretty plain of Waterloo. On the night of June 17 there was a continuous rain- storm, making it very disagreeable for the soldiers. The clouds cleared away on the following morning, and with a sea glass which we had taken from the ship we stood on the heights some distance away and saw the great struggle.
‘‘We could see Napoleon on his charger, riding along his lines preparing for the battle. ‘The lines were formed, and soon the field was filled with smoke and the roar of cannon reverberated through the hills of Belgium. In the afternoon the fierce struggle ceased, and the field was a sickening sight. The green rye had been trampled down, and the field was noth- ing but dust, like the middle of the road, while the dead and wounded lay scattered thickly over the great plain.
“After the battle went over the fleld and saw some dreadful sights.
“I can remember distinctly seeing Blucher, Napoleon, the Duke of Welling- ton and George IV. I remember seeing George III. and his courtiers riding down to the London docks upon many a

Indian Village Unearthed, Woodchoppers in the big swamp ahout
eight miles from Hammonton, N J., have unearthed a small Indian village, over which the sand had blown, and
which has been hidden in a dense under- growth. When word of the find reached Hammonton it was thought to be with out foundation, but many persons who journeyed to the swamp were convinced that the story was true,
A large mound first attracted the at- tention of the woodchoppers, and upon digging into this they found numerous evidences that there once had been kind of habitation there. Hundreds of arrow-heads, piles of undressed flints, pottery and corn eobs were found,
Other mounds near by were dug into with Jike results, and under one was an Indian canoe, 16 feot long and 3 feet wide, capable of holding cight to ten persons. Despite the utmost careful efforts to pre- serve it, it fell to pieoes as as the earth was removed. Its frailty was partly due to the fact that a large cedar had grown up through the bottom.

Phillp Carey, a wealthy Cincinnati manufacturer of asbestos, committed sui- cide the other day. An hous before his death he made a will bequeathing his business to his employes.
