Then he turned the gas down lew, and ,started to leave the room. But when he opened the door he aimost fell backward |from surprise and fear ; for just outside the door stood a figure w hich tilled him with junspeakable terror. Was it the principal of the school ?

No; it was another ghost.

It was a very much more dreadful-look- ing ghost than Tom. It was taller and a ol Lema and had a remarkably healthy | appearance, as if being a ghost agreed with it. Its face was not exactly white, but a sort of a pale green, and it had red eye- brows and black teeth. Tom was unable to speak. He stood and stared at the spectre until it strode majestically past him into the centre of the room. Then it turned around and beckoned Tom.

“Come in and shut the door,” it said. The voice was not unpleasant to hear, but it did not strike Tom as being agreeable. However. there was nothing tor him to do but obey. He shut the door, and looked timidly at the unexpected visitor. It was such a ghastly ghost !

“Well,” it said, ‘‘aren’t you going to ask me to sitdown? It’s not often that one ghost calis on another. I think you might be sociable and ask me to sit down.”

“Oh, c-c-certainly,” replied Tom; sit down and b-b-be comfortable.”

room, and the new-comer’s eyes gleamed fitfully as he gazed slowly around him.

“You are exceedingly well quartered here,” said the phantom. ‘‘I] don’t think tL ever met a ghost who had such a comfort- able place. Now where do you suppose | have to live /.’

*< I’m sure I don’t know,” said Tom.

“Well, I live in an old ruined tower just outside of N aples.’

Tom was now more alarmed than ever. This might be the ghost of an Italian brigand.

“I see you are surprised that 1 don't av ak Italian,” said the visitor. ‘I can do

The visitor paused again, aud once more Tom could not bear the silence.

“‘When,” he asked, ‘‘d-d-d-d you c-come over.”

‘‘A bout five minutes before you met me,” answered the stranger. ‘“‘I just jumped down the crater of Vesuvius, and through the bowels of the earth. But now I have a proposition to make to you.”

‘*What is th-that?”

‘You haven't been a ghost very long, have you?”

‘* N-n-no,” stammered Tom.

‘‘] thought not. If you had, you would know better than to wear such a nightcap. They are out of fashion for ghosts long ago. However, I think they'll adiit you. Iam here for the purpose of atten ling the eight- hundredth annual convention of English- speaking ghosts. It is to be held in the woods just north of this place at midnight. I want you to come with me. We shall meet some prime old spectres there, | assure you. I understand that Julius Cesar is going to preside. Come alone.”

The Struggle with Mormonism.

The United States Government has beer for some time past engaged in a de sperate struggle with the Mormon Chureh in Utah, and so far with little success. The Ed- munds bill is good enough aa far as it goes, but it needs to be suppleme nted by further legislation. The chief danger to bo feared from the Church is that it does not confine itself to to the promulgation of its religious tenets, but claims the position of a usurp- ing government. As defined by one of its leading apostles, it ‘‘is the only legal gov- ernment which can exist im any part of the Union, All other _goy- ernments are illegal and unauthorized.” It has raised troops, made war upon and massacred subjects of the United

States, formed courts of its own, entered upon rebellion against the nation, and is continually fomenting disloyalty. One

secret of its power in the past is its well- officered lobby at Washington, which is credited with an e xpenditare of $250,000 last session. To counteract this ‘The Loyal League of Utah,’ composed = of patrotic citizens of all parties, has been formed for the purpose of maintaining agents at the capital whose business it is to

destroy, if possible, the influence of the Mormon lobby apon Senators and Repre- presentatives. In this way only can legis

Zailroad from Montreal to Vancouver, a distance of 2.900 miles, is 136 hours. This will soon be reduced to 130 hours, while
