May Tend To Raise Hay Prices In PEI

Although it is not anticipated that there will be any movement of hay from this Province to the i'nited States as a result of that country lifting its embargo. Mr. W. 1: Shaw. Deputy Minister of Agri- rnlture. does believe the action will have a tendency to raise the price hcre.

He thought the lifting of the em- linrgo would prove of great value to Canada as there is an abund- iiiicc of hay in Quebec anda shortage in the United States. That Province stands to benefit consid- crably, as well as certain portions of New Brunswick.

Mr. Shaw believes that the price of hay is bound to rise with a iiravy movement to the south and this would have a beneficial effect here as well as in the rest of the Maritime Provinces.

Y's MEN'S MEETING -- Rev James D. Davidson addressed the Alpha Y's Mend: Club at their regular weekly meeting held in the banquet room of the Y. M. C. A. last evening. Speaking of Dr. Al- bert Schweeitzer. as "The man of the year", he traced the record of this great Christian missionary and explained his reasons for placing the subject of his address on the highest plane. The speakcr was introduced by Chairman Jim Mc- Fadyen and thanked by co-chair- man N. D. MacLean. Christmas music was featured for the balance of the evening. Frank Johnson and 0. K. Presby giving leadership. Miss Nancy MacNevin and Miss Barbara Rupert sang several duets which were highly pleasing and entertaining.

A musical treat of unusual qual- ity was greatly enjoyed by those who were so fortunate as to secure seats in Zion Church on Wednesday night when the senior and Junior Choirs held their annual candle- light service. The voice effects in simulat- ing bclls and chimes during the rendition of "Carol of the Bells” was particularly pleasing and enhanced the impression that a. splendid aggregation of sing- ers had been brought to- gether under unusual leader- ship. S. JAMES ENTERTAINMENT- The annual Christmas supper and entertainment for 5. James Church School was held last evening and was very largely attended. The minister, the Rev. T. H. B. Homers presided during the evening and the musical numbers were directed by theorganist Miss E. Lillian Mc- Kenzie. Santa arrived at the close of the evening and distributed candy and fruit to all the children.

KINSMEN MEETING -A The special Christmas meeting of the Kinsmen Club was held last night in the Charlottetown with the guest

of the Salvation Army who gave an interesting talk on "The Meaning of Christmas." Chairman Ron Smith and co-chairman Ken Mar- tin presided over the meeting dur- ing which Santa Claus put in an appearance and distributed gifts to each of the members. Members were fined heavily for violation of club rules and 320.00 was collected and forwarded to the Salvation Army for their Christmas Cheer. Following the meeting five new members were inducted in to the Club. They are Clive Cudmore. Alf Cordell. Dr. Frank Burge, Bob Jorgeson and Ed Martin.

Glen Valley wfif Annual Meeting

The annual meeting of Glen Valley Women's Institute was held at the home of Mrs. Cyrus Mar- tin. The meeting opened with the Ode followed by the Creed in unison. Roll call was answered by members paying 25 cents to A.C. W.W. fund. and their annual fees.

The minutes of the last annual

meeting and the last regular monthly meeting were read and adopted. A report of the year's

work was given by the secretary. Mrs. Norman MacDonald.

The election of officers follow- ed: President. Mrs. Ray Frizzell; vice-president. Mrs. Sterling Mac- Lean; secretary. Mrs. Cyrus Mar- tin: treasurer. Mrs. Arthur Mac- Lean; directors. Mrs. Ivan Frizzell, Mrs. John Nicholson, Mrs. Chris- tins. Dickieson; auditors, Mrs Norman MacDonald and Mrs. Al- ton MacLean. The committees re- ported and new ones were ap- pointed as follows: Sick, Mrs. Ray Frizzcll. Mrs. Arthur MacLean; program,- Mrs. John MacLennan and Mrs. Cyrus Martin; school. Mrs. Christena. Dickieson.

Mrs. Ray Frizzell invited mem- bers to her home for the next meeting, when roll call will be answered with a joke. It was moved and seconded that curtains would be bought for the school.

The meeting closed with the National Anthem. and lunch was served by the hostess assisted by Mrs. Arthur MacLean and Mrs. Norman MacDonald.

The names of , successful cand- idates in the recent examinations held by the Prince Edward Island Institute of Chartered Accountants were announced here last night.

Taking the examinations were five Charlottetown men. Mems H. A. Forsythe and K. J. McKenna passed the final exams, C. E. John- ston and G. D. Dennis the inter- mediate and Robert Mayhew the primary.

The total number of candidates taking the examinations across Canada was 1,589, 854 of” whom wrote their final papers. 685 more wrote the intermediate examina- tion. The men who successfully completed their final examinations are now eligible to become mem- bers of the Institute of Chartered Accountants while the successful intermediate candidates normally have two more years of study ahead , of them.

he married Miss Ethel M.acPhee of Charlottetown and is the father of two girls and a boy.

Kevin J. McKenna (above) who received the degree of Chartered Accountant this week. is a native of Kclly's Cross where he was born in 1923. He received his early education there, and as a result of the entrance examinations to Prince of Wales College. he was the winner of ll, Bell Scholarship. Subsequently he enrolled at P. W. C. and pursued further studies at St. Duustants University. He then taught school for a year and en- listed in the Canadian Army in which he spent four years, part of the time overscas. On rehabilita- tion tn civilian life, he enrolled at Dalhousie University, and in 1950 obtained the degree of Bach- elor of Commerce. The same year he joined the staff of H. R. Deane and Company in Halifax, and. was later transferred to the Charlotte- town officc of that firm.

A staff more than double the normal one this week has literally been fighting its way through mountains of mail at the local Post Office. Each year the job of handling the hundreds of thousands of pieces of mail arriving and de- parting becomes greater. Last year hit an all-time record. but it is believed the total for this year may run from 10 to 15 per cent higher.
