For a time they also operated a lobster cannery on their own farm. An enthusiastic darlyman Alfred E. was secretary of the Lot 16 Dairying Company for a number of years. He was a prominent ex- hibitor at fairs at home and other parts of the Marltlmes with his cattle and seed grain, and won many awards, including the John Richards cup for three years in succession for prize seed wheat, oats and barley. also the William Ewing Cup for the some products. After his father's death about 30 years ago, Mr. MacLsan continued the various activities which they carried on together.

Among other activities in which he engaged was oyster fishing at Grand River.

Fox Renchlng

In the year 1912, when the boom ln the fox industry was starting Mr. MacLean built a large ranch at Dot 16. He promoted the A. E. Mac- Lean Silver Fox Company of which he became President. Four years later, when he went to reside in Summerside he removed his ranch to the outskirts of the town. He was also one of the promoters of the Dominion Fur Sales Ltd., of’ which he was the first President For a number of years he produced and sold live foxes, and continued in the industry when it got down to a pelt basis.

He was a large buyer and ship- per of pelts and had important connections in Loaiderl. Ensland-

Mr. Maclean ran his first elec- tion ln 1912, as one of the min- didlibes for the Provincial Legisla- ture for the Third District of Prince against the late H. D. Doble, but went down to defeat with 2'1 othc: Llbcral candidates. in the Coll- servatlve landslide.

In the next general election of 1915. he defeated Mr. Doble. In 1919 he was returned for the same seat, Dr Jam-es Keir being his Conservative oppon-ent.

In the fall of 1921 Mr. MacLean resigned his seat in the Legisla- ture to accept the nomination as Federal candidate for Prince. He was elect-ed on December 28th by a majority of 1259 over the late Hon. ,James A MacNelll, Conservative. and Horace Wright, Progressive. He was returned again in 1925 defeating o. s. Sharp by s malor- lty of 152s. In ms his msiorlty was increased to i721. his 00W"- ent being the late Hon. J. E Wyatt. In 1980 he defeated J. F. Paintings And Handicrafts Exhibition _

Charlottetown was privileged t0 tiave over the week-end all Exhibl tion of Arts and Crafts in the Har- ris Memorial Gallery from the stu- dios of Mount Allison University. The display, sponsored by the Art Society, was presented by Mr. Raul- ston, on able and enthusiastic in- st-ructor in nandcrafts. The head of the Mount Allison School of Art. Mr. Stanley Royle. an artist of out- standing ability contributed a ool- lection of skotc es mainly studies of sea and rock; which showed such a feeling for texture and atmos- phere tnat one could wish that. at least one large finished landscape had been included. His self-portrait, brilliantly done. showed a most un- usual approach.

The colorful flower paintings of Mrs. Christian MacKiei were hand- led broadly, with a, sound sense composition, and masterly technique Especially outstanding were her CQIIVl-LCS of puppies, zliuilas and columbtne.

Other canvases included delight- ful flower studies by Miss Eliza- beth MacLeod and interesting lan- scapes by Mrs. S. A. Hart.

The craltwork snowed excellent design and execution. The metal- work included trays, sconces and bowls, etched and hammered in a wide variety of patterns. Particular- ly attractive were tlie examples of woodcarving, consisting ol boxes, bnckends, tools. etc. The leather bockcovers showed clever and origi- nal motifs and the amusing pottery- animals drew much attention. The jewellery could compare favorably with professional work. both in de- sign and wwkmanship.

A life-long Presbyterian, Mr. ‘Iceman was an Elder and mem- ber nf the Board of Stewards of the Presbyterian Church at Sum- mersld-e. His fraternal associations were with the Masonic and Orange Orders.

They also visited Paris and the battlefields in France.

As one of the Clan MaeLcans, Mr. Mwclean visited Dewarl; Castle. Isle 0f Mull, Scotland, where he was given d reception by Sir Char- les Fitzroy MacLeiin, Chief of the clan. On his return to the Island Mr. MacLean delivered a number of lectures on his interesting ex- perlenoes.

Three New Members Join Legion Auxiliary

The monthly meeting of the 14d- les Auxiliary of the Canadian Leg- ion. Charlottetown Branch was held in the Legion Room: on Fri. day evening October 21th, with the President Mrs. George snarl-en in the chair. The meeting was well attended and three new members were initiated into the membership. Arrangements were mode lor- the sale of wreaths for the coming Pop- py Campaign and teams were a-p- pointed to solicit, orders during the coming week. Much interest is be- ing shown by members in war work and a. good sum was contributed by them at this meeting for the pur- chsre of neccesities of the soldiers.

Letters were read from Malor Craig and Captain Peake of the Artillery, expressing appreciation for donations of socks supplied by the Auxiilai-y for the men of their batteries. A further sum of money was voted for the purchase of wool and socks and committees appointed to procure same.
