day morning, 29th ult., when the passengers were in their berths, some 11 or 12 miles above Maysville. The steamer was at the time in the act of rounding out from shore, having just discharged some passengers on the wharf boat at Manchester.

One of the boilers of the boat is stated to have been blown some 200 yards from the boat into a cornfield— another 260 to 300 yards into the same field.

Notwithstanding the reported statement of the dying engineer, it seems to be the general opinion that the horrible accident occurred from a want of water in the boilers, which in turn was occasioned by an imperfec- tion in the pumps.

She had three boilers, and it is thought the flues of all collapsed. One is supposed to have gone down through the hall. and occasioned the rapid sinking which took place; another passed aft, already mention-| ed, tearing everything before it, and landing in a corn field some 300 yards below; while the third broke into two pieces, one of which was found in the bank close by, and the other in the corn field 250 yards above.

As near as can be told there were 95 cabin passen-| gers and 65 deck ; from 60 to 80 are killed or missing. There were six ladies on board—all saved ; 4 or 5 chil-

Tue Expenses or tuk War.—lt is appearent from| the state of the foreign exchange market, the insuf-'| ficient amount and the high price of exchange, and the demand for the exportation of specie, that the demand for money for the support of the army in Mexico, is producing a very sensible effect, in the exhausting the pecuniary resources of the country. It is understood that the funds for meeting these expenses are supplied, ina great measure, through foreign bankers, and the Messrs. Rothschild are named as being parties to large transactions of this nature. It is not improbable that! this mode of placing funds in Mexico, at the disposition | of the officers of the army, may be more economical, on well as more safe than to transmit the same amount in! specie counted out from the “constitutional treasury.’| But itis apparent that this mode of remittance is not less effective in absorbing those resources which are at this time in brisk demand for, mercantile purposes, than ifan equal amount ingold and silver were taken in monthly instalments, from the bank of New York and Boston.

The Congregation in connexion with the Established Church of Scotland, in Charlottetown, engaged in September last the Rev Samuel Browne, a Licentiate of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, to officiate in St. James’s until the Ist of May next. Mr. Browne is discharging the responsible and ardous duties devolving upon him with much accept- ance to the members of the Church; and is deservedly held in high estimation by all who have heard him, as an eloquent and impressive preacher.

His Excellency Sir Donald Campbell and several gentlemen of distinction, attended occasionally the afternoon service: A pew has been recentiy furnished for the accommodation of the Lieutenant Governor.
