This is a Flycatcher tliat might be taken for a Phoebe. were it not for tho two white “baro" that adorn its wings. It has not the white eye-rings of the smaller Fiycatchere, and as a further dis- tinction from the Phoebe it does not. ﬂick its tail as if under ner- vous excitement. It breeds from P. E. 1.. and N. B. right down to Florida, and winters in South America.

Peweee build their moss-covered nests in tall trees. and usually lay three eggs: these are white with obscure brown markings on the larger end.

A Letter from the Derwent Valley

A letter from a Scottish friend. the last of my old companions. says that the Valley is having "n long spell of very hot, dry and sunny weather," and that the hay- making is two or three \\'0E'l(S earlier than usual." I also have noticed that the world's climati- has greatly changed lately. and that the sun has somehow be- come affected. My own idea is that, our scientists who have been taking power from the sun and experimenting with atom bombs. etc.. may be in some way respon- sible for this. although l have not seen this publicly maintained." Nevertheless, joking aside. man! kind has been tinkering with the forces of nature in such increas- ing measure of late. that unlock- ad-lor results are sure to follow. Huge dams and irrigation waters have drawn frost into regions that never had it before. What is to happen in the case of electricity? For centuries this subtle force has permeated the atmosphere, un- mastered. Now it is drawn from the air and harnessed in ever-in- creasing qusntity. What is to be the upshot? ,

Plant Queries

There has been an increase in the number of plant-queries this year, a very encouraging sign. My friend Mr. George W. Ferguson of New London. sends a frond of a fern. grown in his garden. It is the Adiantum Caplllus-Vcncrls or Maidenhalr Fern. The Latin name signiﬁes "Venus‘s hair.“ and the very slender. thread-like. leaf- etalks resemble dark hair—-though I always supposed the goddess to be a colorful blonde! The fern is found growing on damp walls and rocks. near the coast of southern England, and especially in the counties 0f Devon and Cornwall. Mr. Ferguson's plant is 36 inches across, showing that it appreciates its environment. In the North of England this fern was accounted a tender house-plant.

A resident of Charlottetown sends three specimens which I recognize as garden plants. This puts me at a disadvantage, for there arc hundreds of cultivated ornamentala that I've never seen. However I have sent two of these specimens to a noted authority and in due time will give his rc- port. The third was easily identi- fied as the English Elderberry (Sarnbucus rllgra) and from the faint yellow tinge in the leaves I suppose it to have degenerated from 8. n. sures. the Golden El- der. This plant is closely related to our S. csnadensie.

This shrub or small tree. S. nigra. is involved in much super- stition. It is commonly said to be the tree on which Judas hanged himself, but Cerols sliiquastrum also claims the honor of being the "Judas-tree". A Danish writer mentions anElder at Copenhagen that used to roam about at night and look in at the windows! It was also believed that the cross

was ‘made of Elder which was previously a tree but was then re- duced to a shrub. Because it was the wood 0f the cross it was never struck by lightning!

Such were the quaint old be- liefs associated with the Elder. but our forefathers did not neglect the practical side. They observed that bruised elder leaves are o!- ferislve to most insects, so they made s dccoction of the leaves to keep pests from their fruit trees. The odor of elder-flowers is oi- fcnsive to some people, from it: strength: however. elder-bloom. is often used in the blendiiig of per- fumes, A kind of wine was made from the fruit. In the early days of electricity the pith of the cider was sometimes used in electrical apparatus. According to the herb- alists the leaves of this plant are excellent in urinary irregularities and epilepsy.

Our common blue Iris, I. versi- color. is the subject of an excel- lent article in The Family Herald of July 13th. No writer has yet. to my knowledge, mentioned the curious odor of the flower: I can only compare it to the smell of roast beef gone bad, but not too bad!

To my surprise I found a small patch of Ragged Robin (Lyvhnis l-‘los-cuculi) on the banks of the crock. I soyveti seed of this plant bclore the War, but the Callie destroyed the plants. This 3'05!‘ tlic cattle have no‘ access to the crook and so Razgcd Robin ha! reappeared. A British writer says it is a persistent plant of swampy places but spreads slowly. Th1‘ iaaials are pink, and foilr-cleft. whence the name “ragged?

A visitor to Rustico Island brought in a few seeds. which from their form and smell I iden- tified as the Cow Parsnip (lief!- cleum lanatum.) I regard the plant as not too common, since I have met with it. only foul‘ limv5 in my rambles. More about it in next Notes. I

Extra-curricular The school I attended was a one-roamed structure built of of

stone. with squared windows the Perpendicular style of archi- tecture. The panes were made up of diamond-shaped lattice in the quaint style seen in cottages. The desks were of unpainted deal. with a shelf below to accommo- date our books and dinners (“lunches" now). They were made to hold six or seven scholars, and the backiess benches were the same length. There were usually about one hundred scholars, and only one man to handle them! Still the education imparted was good.

Twice in the year we had 8 subject that was not in the school time-table, and I SUPPOSB Wmlld not be permitted now. One morn- ing in early summer the school- master would nnnouncc: "A pot- ter will be hcre this afternoon. to show you hoiv to make cups and saucers. Be sure to bring your penny." Promptly at 3 o'clock the potter set up his “whcel," a kind of table having a circular revolv- ing platform activated by a foot- pedal. He had also a small keg of white clay resembling dough. He took a chunk of this clay, placed it on the platform, which he set revoviing. and by the deft appli- cation of his forefinger and thumb, in a matter of seconds a neat basin, stood on the wheel. Other crockery followed and the work appeared so casy that when ho asked: "Any boy or girl like to try?" there was no lack of volun- tears. Possibly he selected one who looked clumsicst, for the clay collapsed, broke up. and shot. away ccntrifugaliy. Everybody dodged and laughed, so the pot- ter quieted us by making a bird's nest with eggs and bird complete. out. of the white clay. He then collected his pennies and depart- ed. He made about $3 pcr day in the season at this, but as tsherc was little chance of transport he did a lot nl walking between schools. However $3 thcn. corn- parod favorably with $6 now!
