Here,on an overhanging limb, a noose was speedily adjusted,and young Terry made to pay the penalty of Jeter’s death. The alarm sounded by the jailor when he discovered how his prisoner had been taken from him did not avail. It is almost eertain that among those who took part in the lynch ing of Terry were some of the most pro- minent citizens of the village and o! the surrounding country. [tis very pro bable that the fearful punishment meied out to the accused was largely attribn! ed to the impression that he would plead in extenuation of his crime,insan

A well known Lynch- burg physician is believed to have been consulted some months ago by the mother about the young man’s mental condition. Terry wasa son of Gen. W. R. Terry, the distinguished superia- tendant of the State peni enliary Richmond. He was a gallant officer in Stonewell Jackson’s brigade. The father was stricken with paralysis, and his condition is so ¢ritiealthat he has not been permitted to know of the terrible deed committed by his son or of his tragic death. The wife of Gen. Terry Was called from his bedside by the pews of her son’s trouble, and was returning to ber busband when a telegram came, unnouncivg her son had _ been lynched. The body of Jeter, Terry’s victim has interred in the family buryiog ground at Chamblys- burg. Over 1,500 persons attended the funeral.

All this means a brisk demand for horses of the proper kind, and of which we have comparatively few. Good-sized, active, weil-bred horses will prove one of the necessities of the Militia Depart- ment for som” years to come, and it is questionable if our farmers and breed- ers will be able to mect the demand in this direction tor some years to come. Such being the case, good thoroughbred stalliens should be in demand this son all over the country, but in this as in many other matters of importance our farmers are apt to be slow to leave the old beaten ruis in which thev have been travelling. Those who take to breeding half-breeds this season. ever, need not be afraid ot lute for the enhanced market, as ac cording to the present outlook half-bred horses should be in much better dk mand five or'six years hence then they are now.
