Not long ago I found where I Ruffed grouse had met an untime- ly end at Crown Point. I had been past the same spot only a few days before and there was no sign of trouble. I hate to see where a Ruffed grouse is killed more so than either a Run or pheasant. In comparison with those two species the grouse is relatively scarce and every one killed in the breeding season is a distinct loss and one that is noticed.

Wood- cock signs were encouragingly numerous but we did find where u. Woodcock nest had been raided. Two eggs only had been laid be- fore the nest was destroyed. pre- sumably by a skunk. Woodcock as a rule lay four and this particular bird will undoubtedly set up house- keeping in a new location. Prowl- ing house cats also take a heavy toll of this species of game bird. 0 O C
