‘* As 4 matter ef fact, there are only five thousand names attached to the petition, and not six thousand as stated by our con- temporary, and there are only thirteen hundred signatures purperting to be from Mr. Pops’s constituency, outof an elector- ate of eivht thousand, and not six thousand as stated by the ‘‘ Globe.” There are three hundred and sixty-three signatures of per- sons residing at Charlottetown alene, and a careful analysis of the names shows that some of them are minors,some non-electors, avd somo are persons who are only recently residents in that Prevince. It isa rather rewarkable fact that among the signatures from Charlottetown appear the names of six Dominion officials appointed by the late Gevernment. Mr. L. H. Davies, who was the representative of the Atterney-General under the late Government, and who is the jeader of the clear Grits of the Island, heads the list after the members of the Legislature, and nearly ail the petitioners are known to be or to have been his sup- porters. That may be taken as a tolerably satistactory anawer to the pretence that the constituency of Queen’s is against the policy which its reprentative has sanctioned in Par- liament. It proves in fact that with all the desperate efforts which wore made to secure the signatures, and with the proverbial facility for obtaining signatures to almost any petition, the sentiment of the constitu: ency is so overWhelmingly strong in favor of the Minister of Marine and Fisheries that the efferi has been a miserable failure.
Then the ‘‘ Free Press” says ** twenty out of a heuse of twenty-one members have signed the petition.’ We quite admit that if this wore true it would have some signifi- cance ; but it is not true. There are thirty members in the House of Assembly, and of these only ten or one-third could be induced
to sign the petition. two members of the Government, it is true, signed it, Messrs.
Wightman and Gavin, although the en. dorsement upon the petition, probably writ- ten by Mr. Yeohimself, would lead to the impression that a larger number of Minis- ters had signed it. ‘Then again our neigh- bor the Montreal ‘‘ Herald” tells us that ‘‘every yroup of them is identified by a kind of marginal notes indicating the local- ity in which the signers live, thus the genuineness of the petition is guaranteed in every possible way.” It so happens that there are no marginal notes. There are a iew names on the back indi- cating a few localities where the signers live, but an examination of the signatures instead of proving the genuineness of the petition, would lead to a rather «ifferent conclusie:. For instance, in the second elec- toral district of Prince County, Mr. Yeo's own constituency, there are twenty-tive names signed by one hand. Ata place called Brae thirteen names are signed by one person, and evidently with the same ink, In many other sections, there is nothing to indicate the place where the names have been obtained, while as many as eight, ten and twelve names are writtea through the gpetition by the same hand. A number of names are written in lead pencil. \Vherever such names as MePherson, Campbell, McLeod, McDonald, McCormack and Cameron occur, there are from five to seven written in the same hand. In fact, a careful examination of the petition weuld lead to tiie conclusion that about one quarter of the na nes, at least, are not genuine signa- tures. And yet with all the efforts which these circumstances indicate as having been made to vet up a monster petition from Prince Edward (sland, there are only five thousaudl signatures good, bad, and indifferent, adults and minors out of an actual electorate in the Island of 18,000. —_—_-—_————__ —_—_ + 2 oe & + -—

The ranges were 200, 400 and 500 yards, soren shots at each range with one sighting shot—the highest possible score being 105 points, Captain F. 5. Longworth was this time the fortunate man, winning the prize by the very respectable score of 85 points. The rules as to the absolute winn- ing of the Cup allow it to go to the marks- man securing it at three successive matches; and as Pte. John Crockett’s skill won it for him at the two preceding matches, the result of this one was of much anxiety to the competiters. To keep up the interest in this valuable prize, it is fortunate their Captain succeeded in breaking the spell

Professor Anderson, in commenting on the paper just read, diflered from the lec- turer in some points, particularly’as to the possibility of bringing boys to comprehend the laws of physical science, though they might be got to answer a set of questions, like a parrot, and he expressec the opinion that literature might be made to take the place of science in schools. Messra. Miller, M. L. Dunean, R. C. McDonald foliowed— thelatterappeared to haveentirely misunder- stood what the lecturer had said on the sub- ject of the catechetical method of teaching as if he implied asking questions, and expecting answers from children cencerning things of which it is impossible they could have ever heard or thoughi.
After some remarks from the Rev. D. McNeill,the Lecturer briefly replied to what had been said during the discussion, and the meeting closed, to meet on Friday, the 14th inst.
