—A movement is on foot tor the
establishment of a telephone system for this city. Mr. Rob Angus, of the firm of DesBrisay & Angus, is interesting himself in the matter, as it will to a certain extent, serve the purpose of a fire alarm telegraph. Of course it will
not be as good as a regular fire alarm sysiem, but will be better than none.
For instance, Mr. W., who has a tele- phone, discovers a fire in his section, which (say) is at the Railway Statioa.

Railway Station—and +o 10 any part of the city, It is intended to have central office open day aud night, so that an alarin can be given any time in a few secouds which it would fake a person a good deal of time to carry. A doctor cau be called; the police can be notified of the tramps appearauce ; enquiries as regards mails will be furnished, or, in fact, hundreds of steps will be saved to
any one having an instrument. A good many have already subscribed, and any
one wishing to take an instrument can make arrangements with Mr, Angus. It
is also intended, if the company get enough encouragement, to counect the
city with Summerside, Souris, aud other points of the I-land.
—The members of the British Asso- iation who took part in the excursion to the Recky Mountains arrived safely at the summit ou Thursday night. An address of welcome was presented to the visitors at Calgary, in his reply to which Sir Richard Temple said :
“You have mentioned the wonderful! work of nature in yonder peaks, but we think more wonderful still is the enterprise, energy avd civilization that has, in a mar- veliously short time, spread over this part of the country. We have seen prairie turned into paradise. Everywhere we have been we met with the sturdy work of British hands. We have been much struck with the farming and produce. scratched, then ploughed. We have seen the rich harvest standing, seen it
ped by your matchless agricultural machinery. We have seen the fine cattle in your ranches, and admire the excellent breed of horses there, and now we see the grand mountain tops of the Rockies. We
cougratulate you on your rich country, on the development already accomplished, and especially on the produce of the land. Your have struck us as wonders, their streets, their churches, their hotels, their grain elevators, their livery stables, and other fine houses. Our object in coming ameng you ia not to spy the naked- ness of the land, but to see its great rich- ness of which we shall tell our friends when we return. Among us we have men representing almost every class of science, and we shall be glad, each from our own point of view, to tell the people in England of your great country, and not only tillers of the soil will be attracted to come out here, but skilled engineers, artisans, and mechanics. We beg to convey to you our warmest, cordial, and most brotherly sentiments.”

the toast “Our Guests,” Lieut,-Colonel Ray, Commander of the team, said :— ‘‘General Middleton, Mr. Mayor and
brother oflicers: I make no apology for addressing you as brother officers, because I feel that, although two or three thousand miles separate us, we are so. Weservet e caine Queen (hear, hear); we love the same country, aod we are branches of the same army, (Applause.) The whole of Her Majesty's army are volunteers; sume may be called regulars, and are so, but never- theless, they are volunteers If men are wanted in the time of need, who are called for’ —why, the volunteerg (Applause.) THE militiamen and the firemen of the city made their demonstration, in honor of the returned artilierymen, last evening. The weather was fine, the only drawback being that the night was rather dark, and the toichea rather too few to enable the citizens to see the procession to advantage.
The procession formed at the Drill Shed shortly after 8 o'clock, in the following.

The firemen marched through the prin- cipal streets to the Rankin House. The streets were fail of peorle; some of the more enthusiastic used fireworks to goed purpose; and all invited to give the men a cid treir duty well at Quebee a hearty ws Lome
The dinner at the Rankin House was substantial aud exceedingly pleasant; and the cold water in which the toasts were drunk was of the very best quality that could be obtained. The guests of the evenipg were—

After the loyal toasts had been honored— the toast to His Henor the Lieutenant- Governor having been evthusiastically re ceived —the chairman proposed the toast of the evening, and expressed the pleasure and gratification it afforded him to assist in this demonstration in honor of Major Irving and ibe men by whom he was ac- companied at the arullery competition in Quevec. That they, coming fromm a small aud iselated Province, and Iliboring under wany disadvantages, as Compared with the militiamen of the Upper Proviners and of Great Britain, had succeeded in obtaining a fiest place among the competutors was to him a matter of surprise and great satisfaction, Mr. Haviland :emembered with pride the successes of our volunteers in the clden time—referred particalarly to the remark- able trivmph of Major Pollard at Sussex Vale, and expressed his pleasure at having the fact demonstrated that the men of little Prince Edward Island are still able to maintain her prestige in the friendly contests of this peaceful time, and to take a front rank among the militiamen of the Dominion and the Empire.
Major Irving im responding to the toast said he felt that the demonstration was perhaps a greater honor than the Quebec team deserved. However this might be, it was very pleasing to see such a tangible 'evidence of the close comradeship and sympethy that exists between the citizens of Charlottetown and the Milit'smen. The expression of appreciauion givea by the firemen was especially gratif yit 4. There is much in common between the two forces. Those who make good firemen wiil, as a rule, make good militiamen and brave soldiers. Major Irving narrated briefly the principal facts connected with the com- petition ; and said that considering ther want of practice in shooting with big guns, | and their’ total unacquaintance with the _grounds and the breechloaders used, he thought the shooting of the P. E Island |team remarkably good, The conduct | of the team, during the whole time they ; were away from home, was, he said, soldier-like and highly commend ble.
“The Army. Navy, and Militia,” pro posed by the Chairman, was responded to by Lt.-Col. Freeland and Lt -Col. Beer. Both gentlemen expressed the pleasure felt at the im‘erest shown by the citizens in the triumph of the Quebec Team. and trusted that greater interest would be awakened in the militia, they said, depends to a large extent upon a favorable public opinion. Lient. Col Beer said he hoped the Dominion Government world, in the future, be more liberal to the militia, men of the Island than they have been in the past.

Sir,—I wonld like to ask throngh you whether last night's demonstration was in honor of the Fire Brigade, or in honor of our worthy volunteers | Why did the Fire Brigade keep behind and monopolize all the ‘light for themselves and Worth’s baud ! Are not our volunteers and Galbraith’s band, (who has served our town for 80 mapy years), as worthy of prominence as the before mentioned parties! At a short distance, the voluntecrs could net be dis- tinguished from a rabble; and further, Galbraith’ 8 military band had no chance at all owing to their being no light in frout Some of the Fire Brigade should have stationed themselves at regular intervals on either side of the volunteers to give them a chance to show themselves; for it was they the people wished to see. Mr. Samuel Newson, a respected resident of Cape Traverse, died last week at an advanced age, much and deservedly re- yretted. ‘‘Mark the perfect and upright man, for bebold his end is peace.”
Last week, Rev. W. Thomas, minister of the Episcopal Ci:uarch, arrived from England after a very stormy passage. Mr. Thomas is accompanied by this two daughters, and the party will likely remain on the Island for some time. They are delighted with the climate here, and say that, so far as they have experienced it, it is very similar to that of vid England.
We are always pleased to chronicle the success of Islanders who by energy and perseverance push themselves to the front. Tu this connection we may refer to Captain Cyrus Orr, formerly of French River, New | London, who last week returned to his home on the Pacific Coast after paying his Island friends a visit. Capt Orr left home 12 years ago and after prospecting in Cali- | fornia, went to British Columbia and is now )master of atine steamer on Puget Sound. He isin receipt of a handsome salary and judging from his appearance, has easy times. It may not be out of place to re- marl. that the purser on board his steamer isas:nof Rev. Henry Ward Beecher.
