A Petrified Fcrest.

THOUSANDS OF TREES TURNED TO STONE IN A NEW MEXICO DISTRICT.

The visitor to the petrified forest near Corizo, on the little Colorado, will begin to see the signa of petrifica- tion hours before he reaches the Won. der; here and there at almost every step ip the read smal! pieces of detached lim:bs and larger stumps of trees may be seen almost hidden in the white sand. The road at a distanve of ten miles from Corizo enters an immense basin, the slope being nearly a semi- wirele, and this enclosed by high banks cf shale and white fine clay. The pet- ritied stumps, limbs, and, in fact, whole trees, lie about on all sides, the ac ion ef the waters for hundreds of years have gradually washed away the high hills reundabeut, and the trees that once covered the high table lands, now lie in the valley beneath. Immense trunks, some of which will measure over five feet in diameter, are broken and scattered over a surface of three hundred acres. Limbs and twigs cover the sand in every direction, and the visitor is puzzled as to where he shall begin to gather the beautiful speci- mens that lie within easy reach. There are numereus blecks or trunks of this petrified wood, that has the appearance, for all the world, of haviog been just cut dewn by the woodman’s axe, and the chips are thrown around on the groued so that one instinctively picks them up as he would in the log camps of Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Many ef the small particlesand even the whole heart of some trees have now become thoreughly crystalized, and the beautitul colored cubes sparkle in the sunshine like so many diamonds, Every color of the rainbow is duplicated in these crystals,and those of an amethyst color would pass the eye of a novice for the real stone. The grain of the wood is plainly shown in nearly every speci- men, making the pieces more beautiful than ever. — Evchange.

PHILADELPHIA, May 9.—A_ speeia! from Easton Pa., saysit is learned irom passengers that the hurricane in Leheigh and Wyoming villages, last evening, was the severest ever known in Eastern Pennsylvania. Between Haven and Hazelton treesin the woods for a distance of 2,000 feet were mowed down like grass. The wind and rain beat so hard against the windows of the cars that the Passengers had to place the cushions of the seat against them to keep them from been blown iv, and an engineer of one train beeame frightened and toavoid a wreck by the falling trees, reduced the speed to coal train time.

At Gould’s Siding, near Whitehaven, the engine ofa passenger train was struck by a eollery telegraph pole and damaged. The same pole struck a pas- senger car and made splinters ef its front. About the same time a tree fell and broke the windows on the side of a car, causing the passengers to be much frightened. All this occurred while the train was running at full speed. .

A short distanee below the trainmen had to remove two telegraph poles that Jay across. Near Rockport, a rock, weighing at least 20 tons, rolled from the hillside and lodged in the track. A watchman saw it in time to stop the trains going either way. Near Stony Creek Stution the bodies of four freight earsina Leigh Valley train were raised from the tracks while in metien and thrown on their sides.

A Religious Pilgrimage.

A grand national pilgrimage to Notre Dame de Lourdes, in France, is being organized under the patronage of Mer. Fabre, of Montreal and the manage- ment of M. M. Vacherani Martineau, priests of the Seminary of St Sulpice. The departure will take place at Quebec on the 7th of next Jaly by the steamer Oregon,of the Dominion Line, which will be at the entire disposal of the pilgrims. From Liverpool a steamer will convey the pilgrims direct to Bordeaux, eight hours by rail to Lourdes. The price of the return passage from Quebec to Liverpool will be $100, $120 and $150 according to location. From Lourdes the Pilgrim- age may be continued to Rome and other saered shrinesin France. The returu will take place from Liverpool onthe 15thof August. Anybody can take passage so long as he is willing to conduct himself as a pilgrim and sub- mit to the regulations of the directors. + <> - a
